The Archive - Maurice Gendron
This episode of ‘The Archive’ is dedicated to the cellist Maurice Gendron. Less well-known than some of his compatriots, such as Pierre Fournier and André Navarra, he shows us in these archive recordings that his talent is nevertheless outstanding. First, we watch a 1967 from Paris with Christian Ivaldi on the piano, where they both give one of the finest renditions of Debussy’s ‘Sonata No. 1 for Cello and Piano in D minor’. Maurice Gendron was one of Yehudi and Hephzibah Menuhin’s favourite partners, with whom he formed an unforgettable trio. At the 1964 Bath Festival, we join this trio for a performance of Schubert’s ‘Trio in B flat major’. The program ends in a duo formation, with Ivaldi performing Chopin’s ‘Introduction and Polonaise brillante’.
