The Archive - Leonid Kogan

This episode of ‘The Archive’ is dedicated to the great Russian violinist Leonid Kogan. His arrival in the West was seen as a renewal of the Russian violin school; his cold and sober charisma deeply influenced several generations. Kogan liked rigour. All these characteristics of the musician come to light when he performs Handel’s Sonata in E major, ‘Beau Soir’ by Debussy/Heifetz, and ‘Quatre Préludes’ by Shostakovitch/Tziganov at a 1962 performance in London, and Hungarian Dance No. 17 by Brahms/Kreisler, Paganini’s ‘Cantabile’, ‘Spanish Popular Suite’ by De Falla/Kochanski in a 1968 Paris concert. The program ends on a very close duet formed by Leonid Kogan and his wife Lisa Gilels, as they perform Jean-Marie Leclair’s Sonata for two violins in C major No. 3.
