The Archive - Pierre Fournier
This episode of ‘The Archive’ is dedicated to Pierre Fournier. This cello virtuoso, whose career gained international acclaim at the beginning of the thirties, preferred chamber music as well as and orchestral music. Therefore, this episode opens with Schumann’s Cello Concerto. Fournier is accompanied by the ORTF National Orchestra, under the baton of by Jean Martinon. Later in this episode, Fournier performs another Concerto, that of Saint-Saëns, with the ORTF Chamber Orchestra under the baton of André Girard. For the last piece, Fournier leaves the orchestra aside to play with his son, Jean Fonda, a pianist with whom he often played. They perform ‘Introduction and Polonaise’ by Chopin, for a 1965 French program called “Jeunesses Musicales de France”.
