The Archive - Ansermet & Monteux
This episode presents two great conductors from the beginning of the 20th century, Ernest Ansermet and Pierre Monteux. Both made their debut with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and quickly won international acclaim. At the start, Ernest Ansermet was famed for his contemporary music performances, but in the sixties turned more and more to the classical repertory, as with this archive from 1968 where he conducts the Symphony No.7 by Beethoven with the Orchestre National de l’ORTF. In 1961, Pierre Monteux was named head of the London Symphony Orchestra. Here, we see him conduct that same year The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Dukas, in London.
