This episode of ‘The Archive’ introduces one of the greatest opera legends: Maria Callas. She was not only a diva but also a tragic and romantic heroine. In the first part of this episode, Maria Callas is is shown in France, 1965, accompanied by the Orchestre National de l’ORTF conducted by Georges Prêtre. She performs three arias: “Adieu notre petite table…” from Massenet’s ‘Manon’, “Ah non credea…” from Bellini’s ‘La Sonnambula’, “Oh mio babbino caro…” from Puccini’s ‘Gianni Schicchi’. Callas made her French debut at the Paris Opera in 1958. Here we see her perform with the Orchestre et Chœurs du Théâtre National de l’Opéra de Paris and Georges Sébastian. She sings two arias from Bellini’s ‘Norma’ : "Casta diva" and "La Cabaletta", two arias from Verdi’s ‘Il Trovatore’ and an aria from Rossini’s ‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia’.
