The Archive - Yehudi Menuhin
This episode of ‘The Archive’ introduces Yehudi Menuhin, one of the violin’s masters. From the age of eight, he showed the talents of a child prodigy and begged his teacher to be allowed to practice Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major, op.61. It’s this piece he performs in this recording with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Colin Davis from the International Concert Hall, 1962. Johann Sebastian Bach was also a composer dear to the violinist; throughout his career, Menuhin performed Bach’s sonatas and partitas. In this programme, we see Menuhin during the 1970 Unicef Gala, where he performs the Partita No.3 in E major, bwv.1006 – Prelude, where he shows that he masters Bach’s composition to perfection.
