Chaplin
The little fellow with his moustache, his bowler hat and his bamboo cane is world-famous, but who is the man behind this figure? Mario Schröder pondered on this same question when he choreographed “Chaplin”. Charlie Chaplin’s rise to fame made him a person of public interest, as the clown became political. America’s conservatives were, however, suspicious of Chaplin’s convictions. Suspected of communism, Chaplin was eventually exiled from the US. The ballet describes Chaplin’s life in relation to his creative work, and shows what’s behind the funny tramp: a sensitive artist who observes his environment both sensitively and consciously.
