The Archive: Carlo Maria Giulini
This episode of ‘The Archive’ is devoted to the Italian conductor Carlo-Maria Giulini, one of the last figures of the great Italian tradition. Conducting with his eyes closed, like Karajan, the maestro brings forth a mystical dimension, heard in this version of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor, recorded with the New Philharmonia Orchestra in England in 1965. Following the freshness of the Mozart piece, Giulini displays Spanish warmth with Manuel de Falla’s Suite No. 2 from ‘The Three-cornered Hat’, once more conducting the New Philharmonia Orchestra in the same venue. The broadcast closes with the music of Giuseppe Verdi, Giulini’s favourite composer. Giulini conducts the ‘Sicilian Vespers Overture’ on the occasion of a 1968 concert with the New Philharmonia Orchestra recorded in England.
