The collection “The Archive” presents great performances by legendary artists, remastered using the latest digital technology and enhanced with commentary for today’s audiences. These jewels of music broadcasting have been salvaged from various archives and have been made accessible for home viewing audiences - appealing and enjoyable performances, that offer unique glimpses into our classical music heritage. This The Archive episode brings into focus the greatest performers of Richard Strauss compositions. Soprano Rita Streich and pianist Janine Reiss perform ‘Schlechtes Wetter’, Op. 69 No. 5 (1965). Soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and pianist Gerald Moore perform ‘Morgen’, Op. 27 No. 4 and ‘Hat gesagt - bleibt's nicht dabei’, Op. 36 No. 3 (1970). Aided by conductor Berislav Klobucar, Schwarzkopf sings ‘Ruhe, meine Seele!’, Op. 27 No. 1, ‘Meinem Kinde’, Op. 37 No. 3, ‘Muttertändelei’, Op. 43 No. 2, ‘Zueignung’, Op. 10 No. 1, and ‘Waldseligkeit’, Op. 49 No. 1 (1967). Elisabeth Schwarzkopf takes on the role of Marschallin, with Hertha Töpper singing Octavian in ‘Kann mich auch an ein Mädel erinnern‘ from ‘Der Rosenkavalier’, aided by the Philharmonia Orchestra under direction of Charles Mackerras (1961). The remainder of the programme is performed by soprano Irmgard Seefried with the Orchestre National de l'ORTF under the baton of Piero Bellugi. They perform ‘Morgen‘, Op. 27 No. 4, ‘Wiegenlied‘, Op. 41 No. 1, ‘Traum durch die Dämmerung‘, Op. 29 No. 1, ‘Zueignung‘, Op. 10 No. 1, and ‘Ständchen‘, Op. 17 No. 2 (1965).
