The Archive: Tito Gobbi & Maria Callas
This episode of The Archive presents two of the greatest voices of the century, Tito Gobbi and Maria Callas. Both were “divas” at times but also incontestably great actors. First, Tito Gobbi in different opera arias, in 1958, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Charles Mackerras : : Ehi ! Taverniere ! (Falstaff), Credo… (Otello), the end of Gianni Schicchi, Va’, tosca… (Tosca). We also see him performing Nina, a Venetian folk song, while putting on his make-up. The next film presents Tito Gobbi and Maria Callas in Tosca, with an excerpt from the second act. This performance took place in 1958, at the Opera Garnier with the Orchestre et Chœurs du Théâtre National de l’Orchestre de Paris conducted by Georges Sebastian.
