The Archive: Byron Janis
Byron Janis is one of the greatest pianists of this time. He made his mark in 20th century music history as the first American artist to go to the USSR in the early 1960s. In this episode of “The Archive”, we see Janis performing the music of Sergei Prokofiev and Sergei Rachmaninov for French TV. In 1963, Janis plays Prokofiev’s Concerto No. 3 in C Major with the French conductor Paul Paray leading the RTF National Orchestra. The following excerpt, dating from 1968, is the only recording of Janis performing Rachmaninov’s ‘Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini’. He was accompanied by the ORTF Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Louis de Froment.
