This episode of ‘The Archive’ is devoted to the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, one of the greatest figures of Russian 20th century music. In a 1964 recording from Edinburgh, he performed Beethoven’s Cello and Piano Sonatas with pianist Sviatoslav Richter. It’s a unique moment of music: it was the only time they played the complete sonatas in concert. This programme includes the Sonata No.4. The programme ends with Sergei Prokofiev’s ‘Sinfonia Concertante’, performed by Rostropovich with Okko Kamu conducting the Orchestre de Monte-Carlo in 1970.
