Haydn - The Seven Last Words of Our...
Haydn's Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross was recognized throughout Europe as a masterpiece when it was premiered in the church of Santa Cueva, Cádiz in 1786. Haydn himself thought it was the best piece of music he ever wrote, and it established his fame in Europe and beyond. Paradoxically, the first version for orchestra, the most famous in Haydn's era, is the least known today. Now, for the first time on television, the work has been recorded in its original setting using Haydn’s original orchestral score. This historic television recording is performed by Le Concert des Nations under the baton of Jordi Savall, one of Europe’s leading exponents of period music. The performance is enhanced by specially shot footage from the Holy Week processions which take place in Cádiz every Easter.
