Bach - Suite for Violoncello No. 1

In the baroque church of Dornheim, where Johann Sebastian Bach married his first wife Maria Barbara, Anner Bylsma plays Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 in C major, BWV 1007. Bach most likely composed his series of Suites for unaccompanied cello during 1717-1723. These works are remarkable in that they manage to recreate the effect of a polyphonic counterpoint of three to four voices in a single melodic line. As is usually the case in Baroque musical suites, each movement is based on a dance style. Thus, Bach's suites are each structured in six movements: prelude, German, current, saraband, two minuets, two drunk or two gavottes, and a final jig.
