Bach - Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) composed his Christmas Oratorio between 1733 and 1734, and it has since remained the musical highlight of the year’s end. It consists of six cantatas premiered in Leipzig between Christmas 1734 and Epiphany 1735. Philippe Herreweghe, born in 1947 in Ghent, is a renowned specialist in historical performance practice. The careful phrasing and transparent sound of his interpretations enthrals listeners. This performance was recorded in the Henry Le Boeuf Hall at Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. The solo parts are sung by renowned Bach performers Dorothee Mields (soprano), Damien Guillon (alto), Thomas Hobbs (tenor), and Peter Kooij (bass), as well as with Collegium Vocale Gent.
