Rossini - La Cambiale di Matrimonio
Il matrimonio segreto is Domenico Cimarosa's most famous opera buffa, reportedly so enjoyed by Austrian Emperor Leopold II at its first performance in 1792, he ordered it performed again from the beginning! The plot of La cambiale di matrimonio (The Bill of Marriage) revolves around farcical attempts by Tobia Mill, a rich English merchant, to mix business with pleasure by forcing his daughter, the lovely Fanny to marry Slook, his rich colonial correspondent from America, by means of a bill of exchange. Eventually, it is the gallant Slook himself who persuades Mill to allow Fanny to marry her true love, Edoardo Milfort. The Drottningholm Court Theatre Orchestra, under the baton of Hilary Griffiths, accompany Carlos Feller, Georgine Resick, and Barbara Daniels in Michael Hampe's elegant and colourful production of one of the few 18th century comic operas to maintain a place in the repertoire to the present day. This production gained international acclaim when staged in Paris, Stockholm, and London, where it won the Olivier Award for Best Opera Production.
