Since its publication in 1816, the Nutcracker by Hoffman has inspired many choreographers, directors and filmmakers. The Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky created a score for this tale and original choreograpy by Marius Pepita and Lev Ivanov which premiered in 1892. Although the original production was not a success, the 20-minute suite that Tchaikovsky extracted from the ballet was. However, the complete Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960s and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions and it is staged in many different ways by the most well-known choreographers. This performance revisits the story and provides a phantasmagoric nutcracker, reinvented through hip hop dance influences.
