Singing & Conducting with Hannigan
Canadian singer-conductor Barbara Hannigan belongs to the few who seem to have it all: a lovely voice, a sense of drama, a sensibility in shaping the phrase and a strong artistic ambition. During this concert together with the Swedish orchestra, the Gothenburg Symphoniker, she performs works by Luigi Nono, Joseph Haydn and Igor Stravinsky. The concert starts with ‘Djamila Boupacha’, a beautiful and intense solo piece for soprano by Nono. Djamila Boupacha is a former militant from the Algerian National Liberation Front. She was arrested in 1960 for attempting to bomb a café in Algiers. After a lot of torturing, beating, sexual violence and rape, she worked with a lawyer to bring this case to trial. These methodes used by the French came to light and Boupacha was freed two years later. This piece by Nono exposures the fear, anger and pain that she had to go through. Secondly, the orchestra plays Haydn – Symphony No. 45 under the baton of Barbara Hannigan. The last two pieces are ‘Anne's Aria' (from The Rake's Progress) and ‘Symphony in three movements’ by Stravinsky. The performance took place in 2016 at the Gothenburg Concert Hall, Stockholm.
