Paavo Järvi conducts Ravel, Sibelius and Brahms

Paavo Järvi conducts the Orchestre de Paris in a 2013 concert at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. The evening opens with Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales, which title was chosen in homage to Schubert, who had released such a collection of waltzes in 1823. The Estonian-born Järvi is inclined towards Sibelius, hence he frequently puts this Finnish composer into his programming. For this concert, violinist Leonidas Kavakos features as soloist in Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. The Greek Kavakos had recently stunned the musical world with a wonderful recording of the ten Beethoven Violin Sonatas. The incredible performance is followed by an encore: Bach’s Sarabande from Partita No.2 (BWV 1004). The orchestra concludes Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 3, Op. 90, of which the third movement gained wide popularity in popular culture.
