Karel Deseure, Stian Westerhus & philharmonie zuidnederland
Twin Twinkler
Twin Twinkler
The philharmonie zuidnederland presents a new and highly unusual digital artistic product by a classical symphony orchestra: Twin Twinkler. An oppressive black and white videoclip of a classical orchestra, playing an out of the box composition by and with composer, singer and guitarist Stian Westerhus, filmed and directed by Dries Alkemade. Stian Westerhus, a Norwegian guitarist known for his experimental style, joined forces with the musicians of the Brabant-based orchestra for the extremely demanding and emotionally touching work that is the Twin Twinkler. It was written by Stian Westerhus for wind instruments, electric guitar and vocals, and custom-made for the purpose of this unusual collaboration. The philharmonie zuidnederland premiered the work together with Stian Westerhus in February 2018 in Maastricht and Eindhoven. After the performance Stefan Rosu and artistic programmer Jos Roede set out to create a visual component that paralleled the musical depth of the work. And so, in 2019, the film was shot in a devastated industrial building in the Dutch town of Veghel. The result is nothing short of breath-taking: Stian Westerhus’ dark and very powerful music is accompanied by black-and-white film aesthetics, reminiscing of Michael Curtiz’ Casablanca and old pirate films. A true piece of audiovisual art!
