Maestros Series – Cello Duello
Cellists Jens Peter Maintz and Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt make up the duo Cello Duello. Jens Peter Maintz is a professor at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, where this program was recorded at Auditorio Sony in February 2020. The concert opens with Joseph Haydn’s Duet no. 19 for two baritones in A major H XII:1 (in a version for two cellos in G major). Afterward, the duo performs their own transcriptions for two cellos of Niccolò Paganini’s Cantabile for violin and piano in D major, Op. 17 MS 109, followed by Carl Maria von Weber’s Adagio and Rondo for harmonichord and orchestra in F major J 115, based on an arrangement of Gregor Piatigorsky. Founded in 1991, Cello Duello has played all over the world and is a welcome guest at prominent cello festivals, including the Kronberg Cello Festival in Germany, the Amsterdam Cello Biennale, and the Piatigorsky International Cello Festival in Los Angeles, USA.
