Prokofiev - Piano Concerto No. 3, Op. 26
Valery Gergiev conducts the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre in a performance of Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3, Op. 26. Soloist is the Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov (*1991), who won First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition and Arthur Rubinstein Competition, and was a prizewinner at the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2010. Prokofiev started composing his third piano concerto as early as 1913, sketching a theme and some variations. He revisited these sketches in 1916 and 1917, finally finishing the concerto in the summer of 1921. It is his most popular and critically acclaimed piano concerto. The composer himself was the soloist when the work premiered in Chicago with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra led by Frederick Stock in December 1921. This performance was recorded at Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in the Russian capital Moscow as part of Prokofiev's 125th anniversary celebrations in 2013.
