Temirkanov conducts Prokofiev
Yuri Temirkanov conducts the Philharmonic Orchestra of Saint-Petersburg during a concert dedicated to works by Sergei Prokofiev. Recorded at the Bonlieu Scène Nationale as part of the Annecy Classic Festival of 2015. Pianist Denis Matsuev opens as soloist in Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3. The composer already started working on the concerto in 1913 when he wrote a theme with variations. Although revisiting the sketches in 1916, Prokofiev didn’t complete the score until the summer 1921. Prokofiev himself was the soloist at the premiere in Chicago with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra continues the programme performing musical excerpts from the ballet Romeo and Juliette and closes with "Amoroso" from Cendrillion, Op. 87.
