Fridays and Sundays in August

Every two years, promising young vocalists gather in Wales’s capital city to take part in one of the world’s most prestigious singing competitions: the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Past editions have helped launch the careers of some of the biggest stars in opera, including Karita Mattila, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Bryn Terfel. This August, Stingray Classica presents four broadcasts from the 2013 edition of this renowned vocal competition. Tune in on Friday evenings at 21:00 CEST and enjoy the most enthralling highlights of the twenty competitors’s performances. Host Connie Fisher, conductor Tim Rhys-Evans, and several guests then evaluate their accomplishments. Repeats of these programs will air on Sundays in August at 21:00 CEST.


BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2013 - Round 1

August 4 and 6 | 21:00

This first broadcast features the 2013 edition of the renowned competition, in which twenty young opera singers compete for their chance to become the next international opera star. Enjoy the most enthralling highlights from the first five competitors’ performances. Host Connie Fisher, along with an all-Welsh panel consisting of conductor Tim Rhys-Evans, soprano Rosemary Joshua, and tenor Wynne Evans, then evaluate the contestants’ accomplishments. In this first episode, the following young singers take the stage: bass Kihwan Sim (South Korea, 1983), soprano Katherine Broderick (UK, 1982), tenor Yi Li (China, 1984), mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton (USA, 1981), and bass-baritone Marko Mimica (Croatia, 1987). All participants are accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under the baton of German conductor Jun Märkl, recorded at St David’s Hall in Cardiff, Wales.


BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2013 - Round 2

August 11 and 13 | 21:00

This second broadcast features the 2013 edition of the renowned competition, in which twenty young opera singers compete for their chance to become the next international opera star. Enjoy the most enthralling highlights from the five competitors’ performances of the second round. Host Connie Fisher, along with an all-Welsh panel consisting of conductor Tim Rhys-Evans, soprano Catrin Wyn-Davies, and tenor Wynne Evans, then evaluate the contestants’ accomplishments. In this second episode, the following young singers take the stage: soprano Mária Celeng (Hungary, 1988), baritone Alexey Bogdanchikov (Russia, 1985), mezzosoprano Gala El Hadidi (Egypt, 1982), mezzosoprano Loriana Castellano (Italy, 1981), and baritone Luthando Qave (South Africa, 1986). All participants are accompanied by the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera under the baton of British conductor Graeme Jenkins, recorded at St David’s Hall in Cardiff, Wales.


BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2013 - Round 3

August 18 and 20 | 21:00

This third broadcast features the 2013 edition of the renowned competition, in which twenty young opera singers compete for their chance to become the next international opera star. Enjoy the most enthralling highlights from the five competitors’ performances of the third round. Host Connie Fisher, along with an all-Welsh panel consisting of conductor Tim Rhys-Evans, soprano Shân Cothi, and baritone Jason Howard, then evaluate the contestants’ accomplishments. In this third episode, the following young singers take the stage: mezzosoprano Eglé Šidlauskaité (Lithuania, 1983), soprano Susana Gaspar (Portugal, 1981), baritone Gary Griffiths (Wales, 1983), soprano Olena Tokar (Ukraine, 1987), and tenor Yuri Gorodetski (Belarus, 1983). All participants are accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under the baton of German conductor Jun Märkl, recorded at St David’s Hall in Cardiff, Wales.


BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2013 - Round 4

August 25 and 27 | 21:00

This fourth broadcast features the 2013 edition of the renowned competition, in which twenty young opera singers compete for their chance to become the next international opera star. Enjoy the most enthralling highlights from the last five competitors’ performances. Host Connie Fisher, along with an all-Welsh panel consisting of conductor Tim Rhys-Evans, soprano Rebecca Evans, and conductor Grant Llewellyn, then evaluate the contestants’ accomplishments. In this fourth episode, the following young singers take the stage: baritone Michał Partyka (Poland, 1985), tenor Ben Johnson (England, 1983), mezzosoprano Daniela Mack (Argentina, 1982), bass-baritone Jeongcheol Cha (South Korea, 1981), and soprano Teresa Romano (Italy, 1985). All participants are accompanied by the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera under the baton of British conductor Graeme Jenkins, recorded at St David’s Hall in Cardiff, Wales.
