Concours musical international de Montréal

Throughout January, Stingray Classica continues broadcasting the complete Voice Edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal 2022 (CMIM) on Tuesdays at 21:00 CET. This vocal competition consists of an Aria and an Art Song division. Of the thirty-two enterprising young vocalists who took part in last year’s edition, only sixteen reached the semi-final. Just eight of them made it to final round for a spellbinding finish.


CMIM Voice 2022 – First Round: Dania El Zein

Soprano Dania El Zein (France, 1990) performs ‘Arrière!’ from Maurice Ravel’s opera L’enfant et les sortilèges; ‘Appena mi vedon’ from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera buffa La finta giardiniera (The Pretend Garden-Girl); and ‘Valse tyrolienne’ from Jacques Offenbach’s opérette Un mari à la porte, during the first round of the Voice Edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal 2022 (CMIM). This performance was recorded at the Bourgie Hall of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Countertenor Nils Wanderer (Germany, 1993) performs ‘Stille amare’ from George Frideric Handel’s opera Tolomeo, re d'Egitto; ‘I know a bank’ from Benjamin Britten’s opera A Midsummer Night’s Dream; and ‘Oblivion soave’ from Claudio Monteverdi’s opera L’incoronazione di Poppea, during the first round of the Voice Edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal 2022 (CMIM). This performance was recorded at the Bourgie Hall of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Baritone Michael Lafferty (United Kingdom, 1996) performs ‘The Phantom’ from Gerald Finzi’s song cycle Earth and Air and Rain, Op. 15; ‘Love bade me welcome’ from Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Five Mystical Songs; Franz Schubert’s Der Einsame, Op. 41, D. 800; and Godfrey Ridout’s arrangement of the traditional folk song ‘Ah! Si mon moine voulait danser’, during the first round of the Voice Edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal 2022 (CMIM). This performance was recorded at the Bourgie Hall of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Soprano Alexandra Flood (Australia, 1990) performs ‘Liebesbotschaft’ from Franz Schubert’s song collection Schwanengesang, D. 957; ‘Elle était descendue au bas de la prairie’ from Lili Boulanger’s song cycle Clairières dans le ciel; ‘The Couriers’ from Aribert Reimann’s Six Poems by Sylvia Plath; ‘Ständchen’ from Richard Strauss’s 6 Lieder, Op. 17; and ‘Not in a silver casket’ from Jake Heggie’s Songs and Sonnets to Ophelia, during the first round of the Voice Edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal 2022 (CMIM). This performance was recorded at the Bourgie Hall of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Baritone Jonah Spungin (Canada, 1994) performs Franz Schubert’s An die Leier, D. 737; ‘To Lizbie Browne’ from Gerald Finzi’s song cycle Earth and Air and Rain; Camille Saint-Saëns’s Danse macabre for voice and piano, Op. 40; and ‘Vesennie vody’ from Sergei Rachmaninoff’s 12 Romances, Op. 14, during the first round of the Voice Edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal 2022 (CMIM). This performance was recorded at the Bourgie Hall of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Soprano Monika Mazanka (Cameroon/Canada, 1989) performs Franz Schubert’s Gretchen am Spinnrade, Op. 2, D. 118; ‘Les papillons’ and ‘Hébé’ from Ernest Chausson’s 7 Mélodies, Op. 2; and Moses Hogan’s arrangements of ‘Deep River’ and ‘Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child’, during the first round of the Voice Edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal 2022 (CMIM). This performance was recorded at the Bourgie Hall of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Baritone Bryan Murray (USA, 1989) performs ‘Les berceaux’ from Gabriel Fauré’s Trois chansons, Op. 23; ‘Der Neugierige’ from Franz Schubert’s song cycle Die schöne Müllerin, D. 795; and Samuel Barber’s Three Songs, Op. 10, during the first round of the Voice Edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal 2022 (CMIM). This performance was recorded at the Bourgie Hall of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Soprano Vivian Yau (Hong Kong SAR, 1995) performs Franz Schubert’s Die Blumensprache, D. 519, and An die Entfernte, D. 765; ‘C’est l’extase langoureuse’ and ‘Green’ from Claude Debussy’s Ariettes oubliées; and ‘St. Ita’s Vision’, ‘Promiscuity’, and ‘Sea Snatch’ from Samuel Barber’s song cycle Hermit Songs, during the first round of the Voice Edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal 2022 (CMIM).
