Reina Sofía School of Music

This chamber music concert is part of the ‘Solistas del Siglo XXI’ concert series of the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid. First, Quinteto Zéphyros performs Leoš Janáček’s Mládí (‘Youth’) for wind sextet. This is followed by French flautist Paul Taffanel’s Wind Quintet in G minor, performed by Quinteto Scarlatti de Casa de la Moneda. Next, violinist Cecilia Novella Genovés and pianist Alina Artemyeva present Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir d'un lieu cher, Op. 42, followed by Eugène-Auguste Ysaÿe’s Sonata for solo violin in D minor, Op. 27, No. 3, played by Genovés. Next on the program is Henry Vieuxtemps’s Capriccio, Op. 55, ‘Hommage à Paganini’, presented by violist Mario Carpintero Martín. Bassist Ramsés Martínez Millán and pianist Marharyta Kozlovska close the program with a performance of Johannes Sperger’s Sonata for double bass and viola in D major (in an arrangement for double bass and piano). Paul Goodwin conducts the Conjunto Barroco of the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid in a Baroque music program featuring works by Georg Muffat, J. S. Bach, and Jean-Philippe Rameau. On the program are Muffat’s Sonata No. 5 in G major, 'Armonico tributo'; Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 4 in D major, BWV 1069; and Rameau’s Suite from the opera ‘Les Boréades’. Péter Csaba leads the Spanish Orquesta Sinfónica Freixenet del Encuentro in this inaugural concert of the Encuentro de Música y Academia de Santander. The program opens with Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the left hand in D major, featuring Uzbekistani-born American pianist Stanislav Ioudenitch as the soloist. Composed between 1929 and 1930, the work was commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein, an Austrian concert pianist who continued his career after losing his right arm during the First World War. The program closes with Ravel’s famous Boléro. One of the world’s most popular classical pieces, the Boléro is characterized by a prominent, unchanging rhythm played on the snare drum, which continues throughout the piece.
