Movember

Every Thursday in November

During the month of November, men worldwide grow a moustache in order to raise awareness of men’s health issues. Stingray Classica joins in on Movember by broadcasting a delightful selection of pieces by famously mustachioed classical composers on Thursday evenings at 21:00. To begin, on November 6, Stingray Classica presents Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, performed by pianist Pascal Amoyel and the Flanders Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Jan Latham-Koenig. This is followed by Grieg’s Two Melodies, Op. 53, played by Orquestra Johann Sebastian Rio. On November 13, enjoy a moving performance of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem in D minor, presented by conductor Conrad van Alphen, his Sinfonia Rotterdam, and the Laurenscantorij. One week later, Stingray Classica presents two well-known pieces by Edward Elgar: his Concerto for Cello in E minor, and the Enigma Variations. Stingray Classica’s Movember special concludes on November 27 with Isaac Albéniz’s piano suite Iberia (Book I and II), performed by star pianist Daniel Barenboim.

Grieg - Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16

Thursday, November 6 | 21:00

Conductor Jan Latham-Koenig leads the Flanders Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16. French pianist Pascal Amoyel features as the soloist. Grieg composed the work in 1868, drawing inspiration from Norwegian folk music. It is the composer’s only concerto. The work premiered on April 3, 1869 in Copenhagen, Denmark, with Edmund Neupert as the soloist, and was received enthusiastically. The Norwegian premiere followed a few months later. This performance was recorded at Concertgebouw Brugge, Belgium, on April 21, 2016.

Grieg - Two Melodies, Op. 53

Thursday, November 6 | 21:30

The Brazilian Orquestra Johann Sebastian Rio performs Edvard Grieg’s Two Melodies, Op. 53. Grieg arranged these pieces for string orchestra in 1891, based on two of his earlier songs: ‘Norsk’ (Norwegian) and ‘Det første møde’ (The First Meeting).

Fauré - Requiem in D minor, Op. 48

Thursday, November 13 | 21:00

Conductor Conrad van Alphen leads Sinfonia Rotterdam and the Laurenscantorij choir in a sublime performance of Gabriel Fauré’s celebrated Requiem. They are joined by soloists Ilse Eerens (soprano) and Martijn Cornet (baritone). Fauré composed the first version of his ‘Un petit requiem’ in 1887-88. In 1893, a second version premiered, adding the Offertoire and Libera me to the original five movements. The definitive version for full orchestra was finally premiered in 1900. This performance was recorded at De Doelen in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on September 26, 2015.

Elgar - Concerto for Cello, Op. 85

Thursday, November 20 | 21:00

For over two decades, the Berlin Philharmonic has celebrated its creation on May 1 with the annual Europakonzert, which in 2010 was held in Oxford. Led by Daniel Barenboim, the orchestra and the young American cellist Alisa Weilerstein, who has attracted widespread attention for her passionate yet precise musicianship, perform a breathtaking rendition of Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, Op. 85

Elgar - Enigma Variations

Thursday, November 20 | 21:30

The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Florence Musical May) is Italy’s oldest opera and arts festival. It was founded in 1933 with the aim of presenting contemporary and forgotten operas. Over the years, the scope widened, and orchestral concerts have long been an integral part of the festival. As part of the festival’s 2021 edition, Sir John Eliot Gardiner leads the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in a wonderful concert program that includes Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op. 17, ‘Little Russian’, and Edward Elgar’s Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, better known as the Enigma Variations. Written in 1872, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 bears the nickname ‘Little Russian’, as the composer used folk tunes in his work from Ukraine, then known as ‘Little Russia’. Completed in 1899, Elgar’s Enigma Variations is an orchestral work comprising a theme and fourteen variations, each variation being a musical sketch of one of the composer’s friends. This performance was recorded at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, Italy, in 2021.

Albéniz - Iberia Book 1 & 2

Thursday, November 27 | 21:00

Star pianist Daniel Barenboim performs the first and second books of Isaac Albéniz’s piano suite Iberia. Composed between 1905 and 1908, Iberia is in four books of three pieces each. This masterpiece paints twelve musical portraits of Spanish regions, traditions, and atmospheres. This performance was recorded at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on August 19, 2000.
