Women’s History Month
Saturdays in March
Inspired by the annual celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, which highlights the contributions of women to history and contemporary society, Stingray Classica dedicates every Saturday evening in March at 21:00 to classical performances in which women artists play crucial roles. On International Women’s Day, Stingray Classica presents ‘Divas and Diamonds’: this dazzling concert features immortal songs from the golden days of black and white cinema. Norwegian mezzosoprano Tuva Semmingsen performs ‘Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend’, ‘My Favorite Things’, ‘Over the Rainbow’, and other unforgettable evergreens. On March 15, Stingray Classica broadcasts the documentary ‘The Three Lives of Clara Schumann’, which traces the intriguing life of German pianist and composer Clara Wieck, who was married to Robert Schumann. One week later, talented young Venezuelan conductor Glass Marcano leads the Orchestre Symphonique Région Centre-Val de Loire/Tours in performances of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major and Georges Bizet’s Symphony in C major. Established French violinist Stéphanie-Marie Degand is the soloist in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Women’s History Month comes to an end on Stingray Classica on March 29 with Martha Argerich’s celebratory birthday concert. On the occasion of her 80th birthday, the “Grande Dame” of the piano explores chamber music repertoire in a thrilling concert at Château de Chantilly, France. She is joined by various renowned artists, including pianist Lily Maisky, violinist Akiko Suwanai, and her daughter Lyda Chen-Argerich on viola.

Musicians of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the DR Big Band, and the Danish National Vocal Ensemble join forces under the baton of Klaus Tönshoff in this dazzling concert featuring great songs from black and white cinema. Norwegian mezzosoprano Tuva Semmingsen sings ‘Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend’, from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, ‘My Favorite Things’ from The Sound of Music, ‘Over the Rainbow’ from The Wizard of Oz, ‘Moon River’ from Breakfast at Tiffany's, and many other unforgettable hits. This concert performance was recorded at the DR Koncerthuset in Copenhagen, Denmark, in June 2020.
The Three Lives of Clara Schumann

The documentary “The Three Lives of Clara Schumann” traces the fascinating life story of German pianist and composer Clara Schumann. Born Clara Wieck in Leipzig in 1819, she was an exceptionally talented pianist, with an impressive international music career. She first met Robert Schumann, whom she married in 1840 and eventually had eight children with, in 1828. Basing itself on her letters and diaries, her compositions, and on accounts from musicians who have intensively studied her music, this 2019 documentary offers a multi-angled perspective on Clara Schumann. It records the various places where she lived, and the cities she visited as a pianist. This thought-provoking film was directed by Andreas Morell and Magdalena Zieba-Schwind.
Beethoven Violin Concerto & Bizet Symphony in C

Young Venezuelan conductor Glass Marcano is a rising star. Having played in various local youth and symphony orchestras as a violinist, her first experience conducting an ensemble followed in 2012. In September 2020, she won the Orchestra Prize at La Maestra Competition – the first orchestra direction contest for women – held in Paris. In this concert, recorded at Opéra de Tours in February 2021, Marcano leads the Orchestre Symphonique Région Centre-Val de Loire/Tours in performances of two Romantic masterpieces. The program opens with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, featuring Stéphanie-Marie Degand as the soloist. This piece is one of the most important works in its genre. The program concludes with Georges Bizet’s 1855 Symphony in C major, written when the composer was only 17 years old.
Martha Argerich – A Birthday Celebration III

On the occasion of her 80th birthday, Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich explored chamber music repertoire in this wonderful concert, recorded at Château de Chantilly, France. The ‘Grande Dame’ of the piano is joined by various renowned artists, including pianists Lily Maisky and Iddo Bar-Shaï, violinists Tedi Papavrami and Akiko Suwanai, her daughter Lyda Chen-Argerich on viola, and cellist Mischa Maisky. On the program are Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49; Leoš Janáček’s Violin Sonata; Franz Schubert’s Rondo in A major, D. 951; and Johannes Brahms’s Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor, Op. 60. These performances were recorded on May 4 and June 13, 2021.
