On Tuesday evenings in March at 21:00 CET, Stingray Classica premieres six wonderful broadcasts dedicated to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. On March 5, enjoy Mozart’s Violin Concertos No. 3 to 5, performed by violinist David Grimal and his ensemble Les Dissonances. On March 12, Stingray Classica shows an all-Mozart concert performed by French soprano Sabine Devieilhe and Ensemble Pygmalion led by Raphaël Pichon. Lastly, on March 19, Stingray Classica presents Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19 in C major, K. 465, and Serenade No. 10 in B-flat major, K. 361, also known as ‘Gran Partita’.
Mozart - Violin Concerto No. 3

Les Dissonances is a collective of artists founded by violinist David Grimal in 2004. The conductorless ensemble consists of musicians from the most prestigious European orchestras, international soloists, and young talents. In this performance, Les Dissonances play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, K. 216. Leading violinist Grimal features as the soloist. With the exception of the first violin concerto, Mozart composed his other four violin concertos in 1775 at a time when he was concertmaster at the Salzburg court. Violin Concerto No. 3 opens with a theme the composer borrowed from the aria ‘Aer tranquillo’ of his then recent opera Il re pastore. In the beautiful Adagio, the strings are muted and the oboes make way for the flutes, which only sound in the second movement. The finale movement has a dance-like character. This performance was recorded at Cité de la Musique, France, in 2014.

Among his five concertos, Violin Concerto No. 4 is one of the best-known. This performance was recorded at Cité de la Musique, France, in 2014.

In this performance, Les Dissonances play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219, also known as the ‘Turkish Concerto’. Leading violinist Grimal features as the soloist. With the exception of the first violin concerto, Mozart composed his other four violin concertos in 1775 at a time when he was concertmaster at the Salzburg court. It is the third and final movement that gives Concerto No. 5 its nickname, the ‘Turkish Concerto’. This movement features a striking middle section of ‘Turkish music’, which the composer achieves not only by changing the meter, and the mode to minor, but also by letting the cellos and basses play col legno - creating a percussive sound with the wood of their bow. On March 23, 1783, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart gave a successful concert at Vienna’s Burgtheater that he dedicated to two sopranos: Aloysia and Josepha Weber, the sisters of his wife Constanze. The concert’s program would be considered odd by today’s standards. The composer’s Symphony No. 35 was broken up and interspersed with other compositions, such as concertos, arias, and works for solo piano. Nearly two and a half centuries later, French soprano Sabine Devieilhe, conductor Raphaël Pichon and his Ensemble Pygmalion bring a wonderful concert inspired by that remarkable event. The program includes: ‘Allegro con spirito’ of Symphony No. 35, also known as the Haffner Symphony; ‘Vorrei spiegarvi, oh Dio’, KV 418; ‘Schon lacht der holde Frühling’, KV 580; Trio of ‘Die Schlittenfahrt’ No. 3, KV 605; Deutscher Tanz No. 6, KV 571; ‘Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen’ from Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflöte; ‘Finale: Presto’ of Symphony No. 35; ‘Nehmt meinen Dank’, KV 383; and ‘Dans un bois solitaire et sombre’, KV 308. Les Dissonances is a collective of artists founded by violinist David Grimal in 2004. The conductorless ensemble consists of musicians from the most prestigious European orchestras, international soloists, and young talents. In this performance, Les Dissonances’ string quartet – consisting of David Grimal (violin), Hans Peter Hofmann (violin), David Gaillard (viola), and Xavier Phillips (cello) – performs Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19 in C major, K. 465, ‘Dissonance’ (Op. 10 No. 6). The String Quartet is the last in the set of six quartets that were dedicated to Joseph Haydn. Written between 1782 and 1785, these are also known as the Haydn Quartets (Op. 10). String Quartet No. 19 is remarkable for its slow, dissonant introduction, giving the piece its nickname. This ominous passage suddenly gives way to the bright Allegro in C major. This performance was recorded at Opéra Comique in Paris, France, in 2015.

The conductorless ensemble consists of musicians from the most prestigious European orchestras, international soloists, and young talents. In this performance, Les Dissonances play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Serenade No. 10 for winds in B-flat major, K. 361, also known as the ‘Gran Partita’. The composition is written for twelve winds and double bass and consists of seven parts. The piece’s duration is longer than the composer’s other chamber music works. Remarkably, Mozart chose to use a larger instrumentation. To the eight instruments of the common wind octet, Mozart added two basset horns, two additional horns, and a double bass. This performance was recorded at Philharmonie de Paris, France, in 2015.
