Mozart Operas
Sundays in August
On three Sunday afternoons in August, Stingray Classica presents beloved operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at 14:00. Firstly, on August 4, enjoy a dazzling performance of Die Zauberflöte (‘The Magic Flute’, 1791), performed by the Orchestra and Choir of Teatro La Fenice. In its fairy tale-like narrative, Prince Tamino and bird-catcher Papageno embark on a quest to rescue the Queen of the Night’s daughter, Pamina. On August 11, the Opéra de Lyon performs Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail (‘The Abduction from the Seraglio’, 1782). This opera tells the story of the Spanish lord Belmonte who wants to free his beloved Constanze from the harem of Bassa Selim. Lastly, on August 18, Stingray Classica premieres an amazing 2021 production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte (1790) by the Orchestra and Chorus of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under the baton of maestro Zubin Mehta. In this sparkling comedy, the two young officers Ferrando and Guglielmo agree to put the fidelity of their fiancées to the test.
Mozart - The Magic Flute
Sunday, August 4 | 14:05
Antonello Manacorda leads the Orchestra and Choir of Teatro La Fenice in a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s beloved opera Die Zauberflöte (‘The Magic Flute’). Mozart probably started to compose his masterpiece in May 1791, less than six months before his death. The work’s libretto is written by Emanuel Schikaneder. In its fairy tale-like narrative, Prince Tamino is commissioned by the Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina, who has been captured by priest Sarastro. Accompanied by bird-catcher Papageno, Tamino begins his quest. After finding Pamina in Sarastro’s territory, Tamino is first subjected to a number of trials in order to prove he is worth marrying Pamina. Die Zauberflöte features wonderful arias, including the famous 'Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen' ("Hell's vengeance boils in my heart"), a virtuoso aria for coloratura soprano sung by the Queen of the Night. Among the soloists are Goran Jurić, Antonio Poli, Ekaterina Sadovnikova, Alex Esposito, Olga Pudova, and Caterina di Tonno. This performance was recorded at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Italy, in 2015.

Assisted by his servant Pedrillo, Belmonte creates a plan to rescue Constanze. Mozart - Così fan tutte
Sunday, August 18 | 14:00
Maestro Zubin Mehta leads the Orchestra and Chorus of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s comic opera Così fan tutte (1790). Following the successful operas Le nozze di Figaro (1786) and Don Giovanni (1787), Così fan tutte was the third and last collaboration between Mozart and the Venetian librettist and poet Lorenzo Da Ponte. The opera tells the story of two young officers, Ferrando and Guglielmo, who are convinced of the fidelity of their fiancées, the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella. However, their older friend Don Alfonso contends that women cannot be trusted. He proposes a plan to test his theory: the young men must pretend to be called away to the front but then return disguised as Albanian soldiers to try to seduce their lonely fiancées. The young men reluctantly agree to Alfonso’s test. Will the sisters succumb to the advances of the disguised suitors? Among the soloists are Valentina Naforniţa (Fiordiligi), Vasilisa Berzhanskaya (Dorabella), Mattia Olivieri (Guglielmo), Matthew Swensen (Ferrando), Benedetta Torre (Despina), and Thomas Hampson (Don Alfonso). This performance was recorded at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, Italy, on March 28, 2021.
