Mozart - Così fan tutte
The opera, based on a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, is a romantic comedy about the complexity of relationships between men and women. With his sensual, spirited and passionate music, Mozart poses fundamental questions about love and brings to the libretto surprising psychological depth and an underlying seriousness not present in the original farce. Michael Haneke created a contemporary staging for the Teatro Real Madrid. The orchestra and chorus of the Teatro Real performed this masterpiece in 2013 under the baton of Sylvain Cambreling. The work features Anett Fritsch, Paola Gardina, Juan Francisco Gatell, Andreas Wolf, Kerstin Avemo, and William Shimell.
Gala from Berlin 2000 - Tutto nel mondo
Recording of the 2000 New Year's Eve Concert at the Philharmonie in Berlin. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi's death, the Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of maestro Claudio Abbado perform highlights from "Un Ballo in Maschera", "Don Carlos", "Rigoletto", "La Traviata" and "Falstaff". Mozart on Tour - Episode 6: Paris
The 13-part Mozart on Tour series chronicles the journey of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart across Europe. The city of Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace influenced his peripatetic life. He hated the city and despised working for the Archbishop of Salzburg as a servant, a musical servant writing only for the pleasure of the Archbishop. In 1777, he left for Paris to find a new job, but his stay was no gaîté Parisienne. He received few job offers and his beloved mother, who had accompanied him, became violently ill and died. In a Salzburg Festival performance, the Mozarteum Orchestra and pianist Mitsuko Uchida, under the baton of Jeffrey Tate, play Piano Concerto No. 9, KV 271. This piece was nicknamed “Jeunehomme” but was composed for Victoire Jeramy, the daughter of Mozart’s friend, dancer and choreographer Jean-Georges Noverre.
Gala from Berlin 2004: Orff - Carmina Burana
A joyful celebration welcoming the New Year with one of the best orchestras in the world. The Gala from Berlin 2004 presents the outstanding Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, with Carl Orffs well-known ‘Carmina Burana’ as well as Beethoven's ‘Leonore Overture No. 3’. ‘Carmina Burana’ is intensely dramatic and one of the twentieth century's most widely performed works for chorus and orchestra. Orff himself once said that “Everything which I've written so far and which you've unfortunately published you can now pulp: my collected works begin with Carmina Burana.” Conductor Simon Rattle is a musical force of nature and the interaction between his unique, varied musical gifts and the great performing traditions of the Berlin Philharmonic is one of the most exciting features of our present cultural life.
House of Dreams
House of Dreams is an imaginative concert designed by Alison Mackay. The concert is a magical journey to the meeting places of baroque art and music - five European homes where exquisite works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Purcell and Marais were played against a backdrop of paintings by Vermeer, Canaletto, and Watteau. Stage direction by Marshall Pynkoski and narrated by Blair Williams. The Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, also known simply as Tafelmusik, is a Toronto-based Canadian baroque orchestra, specialised in early music. The orchestra was founded in 1979 and has 19 full-time members who specialize in historical performance and technique, with additional musicians joining the ensemble when required. The ensemble is directed by violinist Jeanne Lamon.
Semi Final I - Liszt Competition 2017
Jenny Chen (1994, Taiwan) performs Tchaikovsky/Liszt - Polonaise aus der Oper Jewgeny Onegin, S429, Rubinstein/Liszt - Zwei Lieder, S554 und Rapsodie Espagnole, S254 during the semi-final I (transcription) of the 11th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition, held in TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, in 2017. The competition actively presents, develops, and promotes piano talents from around the world. In doing so, it has become one of the prominent gateways to the international professional classical music scene for young musicians. The International Franz Liszt Piano Competition was founded in 1986 in the Netherlands and has since built a reputation as one of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions.
Bach - Partitas for Solo Violin (BWV 1001-1006)
Gidon Kremer’s return to J. S. Bach’s partitas is a major event. Kremer’s first recording of these works was released almost a quarter of a century ago. In this recording from 2006, Kremer once again takes on the greatest challenge for any violinist: Bach’s magnificent “Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin” (BWV 1001-1006), which Kremer himself calls the “Himalayas” of violin music. With these pieces, Bach firmly established the technical capability of the violin as a solo instrument. The partitas served as archetypes for solo violin pieces by later generations of composers. This rendition of the collection displays Kremer’s very personal sense of spontaneity and a readiness to take risks. Yet it is also marked by the structural awareness of an exceptional musician who, in a unique way, does justice both to the polyphonic wealth of the compositions and to their juxtaposition of dance elements and reflective profoundness.
Kristine Opolais Recital
Critics praise her, and the audience loves her. Kristine Opolais, the prima donna and the star of the New York Metropolitan Opera, performs in her home country Latvia.  She gives a splendid concert with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, at the Latvian National Opera, in 2017. In today’s documentary, Claude Debussy’s ‘La Mer’. This masterpiece of suggestion and subtlety richly depicts the ocean. As a specialist in French Impressionism, the British pianist and writer Paul Roberts - also known from the BBC television series “Play It Again” - introduces Debussy’s work with great passion.
Haydn - Orlando Paladino
For more than 25 years, René Jacobs has dedicated his life to baroque operas and works with the best ensembles for early music. On occasion of the 2009 Haydn Year the renowned Freiburger Barockorchester and outstanding baroque opera singers such as Marlis Petersen, Alexandrina Pendatchanska, Pietro Spagnoli and Tom Randle present Haydn’s most successful opera at the Berlin Staatsoper. ‘Orlando Paladino’, written in 1782, was Haydn’s most famous opera during his lifetime, with thirty performances in Esterháza in the first two years after its composition. The libretto, a ’drama eroicomico’, gives scope to Haydn’s frequently puckish sense of humour, as well as his inventive melodic expression. Most semi-serious operas of the period typically inserted comic characters into an essentially serious story but Haydn expanded the comedy even into the more serious scenes.
Sibelius – Symphony No. 6
In 2013, the Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu was appointed principal conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Lintu studied piano and cello at the Sibelius Academy and the Turku conservatorium in Sweden’s southeast. He started conducting at the Sibelius Academy. His many concerts with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2012 made him the obvious replacement for Sakari Oramo, who, after many years as conductor and concert master, terminated his contract in 2012. The orchestra specializes in the performance of Finnish music, but also performs the great masterpieces of Gustav Mahler and Béla Bartók. The Finnish composer Jean Sibelius is the orchestra’s favourite, as well as the conductor. In cooperation with Finland’s national public broadcasting company Yle, all seven Sibelius symphonies are recorded and broadcast. After a brief spoken introduction about the piece, the orchestra performs the complete symphony. While composing his Symphony No. 5, Sibelius was also sketching his Symphony No. 6, using a number of ideas he could not fit in his No. 5 for No. 6. The music is based on modal lines, which are often used in church music. His Symphony No. 6 has few melodic lines and a slightly gloomier atmosphere. For that reason, Sibelius added the description ‘When shadows lengthen’ to the title.
Rachmaninov - The Last Romantic
In 2013, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic closes the fourth edition of the Annecy Festival with a programme exclusively dedicated to Sergei Rachmaninov, led by Yuri Termikanov. The orchestra enchants, with multi-gifted musician Denis Matsuev, with performances of favorites like Rachmaninov’s famous Piano Concerto No.2, the Symphonic Dances, and many more. Denis Matsuev, co-artistic director of the festival and artistic director of the Sergei Rachmaninov Foundation, interprets the Piano Concerto No. 2 virtuously and passionately. The tradition of the Annecy Classic Festival was born in 1967, initiated by the renowned French pianist Eliane Richepin. What started out as intimate performances by local musicians for local audiences has become a relevant cultural collaboration between France and Russia over the years.
CMIM - Quarter Finals - Emily D'Angelo
Esther Gonthier accompanies mezzo-soprano Emily D'Angelo (Canada/Italy, 1994) during the first round of the Aria competition of the Concours musical international de Montréal of 2018 (CMIM). On the program are Rossini’s Contro un cor (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Coeur sans amour from Massenet’s Cendrillon and Parto, ma tu ben moi from Mozart’s opera La clemenza di Tito. Founded in 2002, the CMIM is an annual event that draws thousands of spectators to concert halls, as well as listeners on the radio and the web. The competition seeks to discover and support musicians who demonstrate exceptional mastery of their art. It’s the only international competition in North America to be held annually and to present three disciplines (voice-violin-piano) in a three-year rotation.
Christmas Concert
On 18 December 2017, the Valerius Ensemble played a Christmas concert in Concordia, Enschede. The ensemble consists of Robert Windak (violin), Annemarie van Vliegen (violin), Eva Šušliková (viola) and Réne Geesing (cello). The program consists of “Das neugeborne Kindelein” from Bachs Cantata BWV 122, the Largo from Vivaldi’s Winter, the Allegro from Mozart’s Divertimento in D (KV. 136), Méditation from Massenet’s opera “Thaïs,” The Entertainer by Scott Joplin, the Vilja song from Léhars “Die Lustige Witwe” and the animated Romanian folk-tune Geampara. The Ensemble closes with Piazzolla’s Ave Maria (Tanti anni prima).
Big Nightmare Music
Russian violinist, conductor and composer Aleksey Igudesman and British-Korean pianist and composer Hyung-ki Joo started their dynamic duo in 2004, when they created their show “A Little Nightmare Music,” a humorous take on Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.” Since then, they have been performing at international festivals and touring internationally, often collaborating with artists from within and outside of the classical genre. “Big Nightmare Music” adds an orchestra to their two-man show. On top of favorites from their duo show, like Mozart Bond, Alla Molto Turca, and Cleaning vs. Riverdancing, the show boasts several uproarious sketches, tailor-made for a symphony orchestra, drawing everyone into their act, from the first violinist to the last percussionist. Their 2017 performance at the Grieghallen in Bergen, Norway, is conducted by Andrew Litton.
Views of a free Orchestral Republic
Many music lovers consider the Berlin Philharmonic to be the best orchestra in the world. This documentary shows them up close. We follow their path from the orchestra's emergence at the end of the 19th century up to the present day, when Sir Simon Rattle inaugurated a new era in the ensemble's history. The orchestra's musicians and conductors tell the story of their work and convey an impression of how the Berlin Philharmonic reached their remarkably high standard. The portrait is rounded off with rare archive recordings and excerpts from great performances.
Prokofiev - Peter and the Wolf
Leonard Bernstein, David Bowie, Bill Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev, they have all once narrated the world-famous symphonic fairy tale 'Peter and the Wolf' (1936), composed by Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953). In this work, every character is illustrated by a different instrument (or section), with its own musical theme. Peter, for example, is represented by the strings, his grumpy grandfather by the bassoon, the cat by the clarinet, and the bird by the flute. As the narrative progresses and the characters interact with each other, the musical themes beautifully entwine. This performance (2018) is narrated and conducted by Marin Alsop. The musical accompaniment is provided by the Britten-Pears Orchestra.
