Debussy - Pelléas et Melisande
Alain Altinoglu conducts the Philharmonia Zürich, Zusatzchor Opernhaus Zürich and SoprAlti der Oper Zürich in a performance of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, an opera in five acts to the French libretto from Maurice Maeterlinck's play. It was premiered at the in Paris by the Opéra-Comique in 1902. The plot concerns a love triangle; Prince Golaud finds Mélisande, a mysterious young woman. After marrying her he brings her back to the castle of his grandfather, King Arkel, where Mélisande becomes attached to Golaud’s younger half-brother Pelléas. Main soloists are Brindley Sherratt (Arkel), Jacques Imbrailo (Pelléas), Kyle Ketelsen (Golaud) and Corinne Winters (Mélisande). Directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov and recorded at the Opernhaus Zürich in 2016.
Gala from Berlin - 2011
This year the Berlin Philharmonic and their musical director Sir Simon Rattle welcome the New Year together with multi-awarded Russian pianist Evgeny Kissin. Kissin's musicality, the depth and poetic quality of his interpretations, and his extraordinary virtuosity have placed him at the forefront of today's pianists. This concert he will feature as star soloist in a performance of Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16. Furthermore, the Berlin Phillharmonic performs Dvořák’s Slavonic Dance No. 1, Op. 46, Grieg’s Symphonic Dance No. 2, Op. 64, an orchestrated version of Alborada del gracioso by Ravel, R. Strauss’ Salome’s Dance Salome, excerpts from Stravinsky’s The Firebird and Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 1.
Mozart on Tour - Episode 12: Munich
The 13-part Mozart on Tour series chronicles the journey of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart across Europe. The Bavarian capital of Munich was always one of Mozart's favorite places - it saw important performances of many of his major instrumental works and hosted the world premiere of his monumental opera seria Idomeneo, re di Creta. The first edition of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 26, KV 537, also written for the coronation of Emperor Leopold II in 1790, is remarkable because it doesn't contain all the notes for the solo part. This method prevented the music from falling into the hands of dishonest copyists, but more importantly, it shows that pianists had to improvise the necessary harmonies, sometimes at sight based on musical sketches. Soloist Homero Francesch performs Mozart’s Piano Concert No. 26, KV 537 with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Wilhelm Keitel. This performance was recorded at Munich's residence.
Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 3, Op. 29
The Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote his third symphony in 1875. Symphony No. 3 is Tchaikovsky's only symphony in a major key and also his only symphony that contains five movements. The Third Symphony premiered in Moscow under the baton of the Nikolai Rubinstein. He was a very close friend of Tchaikovsky and the younger brother of the famous pianist Anton Rubinstein. This symphony is also used by the well-known choreographer George Balanchine in his ballet 'Jewels'. This concert features the Mariinsky Orchestra and conductor Valery Gergiev at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. In 2010, all six Tchaikovsky symphonies were recorded by this Russian combination.
Händel - Dettingen Te Deum (HV 283)
Patrick Debrabandere conducts the Vox Mago choir in a performance of The Dettingen Te Deum (HWV 283), a canticle composed by George Frideric Handel, in 1743. On June 27, 1743, the British army and its allies, under the command of King George II and Lord Stair, won a victory at the Battle of Dettingen, over the French army. On the King's return, a day of public thanksgiving was appointed, and Handel was commissioned to write a Te Deum. Soloists are Bart Uvyn (alto), Denzil Delaere (tenor), Helena Maes (soprano), and Joris Stroobants (bas). The Vox Mago is made up of a group of enthusiastic and dynamic singers. The perfromance is recorded at the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Presentatiekerk in Gent in 2018.
Gala from Berlin - 2010
During the New Year’s Gala 2010, the Berlin Philharmonic perform under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, whose infectious energy and exceptional artistry have made him one of the most sought-after conductors by orchestras and opera companies around the world. They welcome mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, who has become one of the world’s most famous singers within just a few years. On the program are various works by French composers, like Berlioz’ Le Carnival Romain, Overture, Op. 9 and D’Amour l’ardente flamme’ from La Damnation de Faust (Op. 24), Saint-Saëns’ ‘Mon cœur s’ouvre à ta voix’ and ‘Danse Bacchanale’ from his opera Samson et Dalila and the ‘Habanera’, ‘Seguidilla’ and ‘Chanson Bohème’ from Bizet’s Carmen. The concert concludes with de Falla’s Suite No. 2 from the ballet ‘El sombrero de tres picos’.
Playing Portraits
The trio composed of Alessandro Carbonare (clarinet), Elisa Eleonora Papandrea (violin) and Monaldo Braconi (piano) performs regularly in Italy’s concert halls and abroad. Playing Portraits showcases the trio’s appearances in various places, including USA, Russia and Europe, as they perform works by composers such as George Gershwin, Igor Stravinsky, Francis Poulenc, Anton Guilio Priolo, and Reiner Kuttenberger. This program was recorded by Pietro Tagliaferri at the Salle Belle Epoque in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.
Brahms - Symphony No. 2, Op. 73
Franz Welser-Möst conducts The Cleveland Orchestra in this performance of Brahms' Symphony No. 2. Considering that Johannes Brahms had toiled for more than 15 years on his First Symphony, it is hardly surprising that his Second Symphony should be a lighter, brighter work that makes masterful use of the achievements from the First. Expansive and unhurried, it charms the ear with its lyricism and excites it with its passionate tutti outbursts. It has been a favorite among Brahms' orchestral works since its premiere in late 1876. Welser-Möst leads his "devoted and exemplarily precise musicians" (Die Presse) in a rendition that polishes every detail to make the work glow from within. Thanks to his many years at the head of the Cleveland Orchestra, Welser-Möst can mold the most intricate sonorities with the subtlest of means. This performance was recorded at the Musikverein, Vienna, Austria, in 2014.
Sibelius - Kullervo, Op. 7
Finnish percussionist and conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali leads the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Orphei Drängdar Men's Choir in a performance of Jean Sibelius's Kullervo, Op. 7. Soloists are soprano Johanna Rusanen-Kartano and baritone Ville Rusanen. The work, often called a choral symphony, is a suite of symphonic movements. However, it avoids the traditional symphonic structure: the five movements constitute a set of independent tone poems. The work was performed only four times in Sibelius's lifetime. The composer refused to publish it: he only gave permission in 1957, at the very end of his life. This performance was recorded at the Gothenburg Concert Hall in 2018.
Gabriel Fauré - Piano Quartet No. 2, Op. 45
The Ébène Quartet, consisting of Daishin Kashimoto (violin), Lise Berthaud (alto), François Salque (cello) and Eric Le Sage (piano), performs Gabriel Fauré Piano Quartet No. 2, Op. 45 at the Museum of Modern Art of Louisiana. It is one of the two chamber works Fauré composed for piano quartet. Fauré adopts the classical four-movement structure: the opening Allegro is followed by a scherzo, slow movement, and finale.
Mozart on Tour - Episode 8: Vienna II
The 13-part Mozart on Tour series chronicles the journey of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart across Europe. With Wolfgang and Constanze comfortably ensconced in Vienna, he enhanced his artistic position as the focal point of several musical academies and large-scale concert presentations. Mozart’s relationship with his father Leopold was tense, as he made little secret of his distaste for what he considered his son's rather frivolous lifestyle. However, when Franz Joseph Haydn thanked Leopold for his contribution to the musical education of the man he declared to be the greatest composer he had ever known, Mozart’s father reconciled with his son. Under the baton of Jiri Belohlávek, soloist Ivan Klánský is accompanied by the Prague Chamber Orchestra during his performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20, KV 466 at the Waldstein palace in Prague.
Mozart - Sinfonia concertante, K 364
Vilde Frang, Tabea Zimmermann and conductor/pianist András Schiff team up for a concert at the 25th anniversary edition of the Swiss Verbier Festival in 2018. András Schiff’s versatile artistry excels both as pianist and conductor, as this program illustrates. He is joined by Vilde Frang, a superlative Mozart interpreter, and master violist Tabea Zimmermann for Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante. The work exemplifies the vast range of emotion Mozart is capable of instilling in one single work: from serene and joyful in the outer movements, to thoughtful and sad in the central movement. Schumann and Brahms - Schiff accompanies Tabea Zimmermann in the core 19th century viola repertoire. Unlike Schumann, whose Märchenbilder were written with the viola in mind, Brahms’ wrote his Op.120 for clarinet and piano. He soon provided a viola transcription, which has become as popular than the original.
Beethoven - Piano Sonata No. 9, Op. 14, No. 1
The two sonatas of Op. 14 were completed after Beethoven's No. 8 “Pathétique” and were published together in 1799. The first of these sonatas, No. 9 in E Major, was later arranged by the composer for string quartet. Despite its relative popularity, this became the only such arrangement that Beethoven would write. This performance is taken from Daniel Barenboim's highly esteemed complete rendition of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas, recorded at the Schloss Hetzendorf, Vienna, Austria, in 1983.
Penderecki - Symphony No. 7: 7 Gates of Jerusalem
The 2017 Prague Spring festival is brought to a powerful close as Krzysztof Penderecki conducts the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and Slovak Philharmonic Choir in a performance of his monumental seventh symphony "Seven Gates of Jerusalem". This work bears witness to an introspective thought about faith, written in honour of the city of Jerusalem, for soloists, choir and orchestra, with libretto taken from Old Testament. For expressive purposes, Penderecki uses specific instruments: the tubaphone, percussive objects designed by the composer himself, and the shofar, an ancient Jewish liturgical instrument. Soloists for this performance include Iwona Hossa (soprano), Karolina Sikora (soprano), Anna Lubanska (mezzo-soprano), Adam Zdunikowsk (tenor), Piotr Nowacki (bass) and David Švehlík (speaker). Also featured in the programme is a rendition of the "Serenade for Orchestra" by Czech composer Isa Krejci. Recorded at Smetana Hall in Prague, Czech Republic.
Haydn - Symphony No. 83 & 84
Sir Roger Norrington conducts the Camerata Salzburg in a performance of Haydn's Symphony No. 83 in G minor, nicknamed La Poule ("The Hen") and Symphony No. 84 in E♭ major. The two works are part Haydn's famous Paris symphonies, a group of six symphonies written by Joseph Haydn and commissioned by the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, music director of the orchestra the Concert de la Loge Olympique. Recorded at the Haydn Festival Eisenstadt in 2000.
Chopin - Preludes, Op. 28
Alessandra Amara performs Chopin's complete Preludes, Op. 28. Chopin wrote the 24 preludes between 1835 and 1839, partly at Valldemossa, Mallorca, where he spent the winter of 1838–39 and where he had fled with George Sand to escape Paris. Chopin brought a copy of Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier with him to Mallorca and just like Bach's work, Chopin's set of preludes contains a complete cycle of all major and minor keys. Whereas Bach arranged his preludes and fugues according to keys separated by semitones, Chopin choose a circle of fifths, with major keys being followed by their relative minors. The term prelude had been used to describe an introductory piece; however, Chopin's pieces stand as self-contained units.
Young Euro Classic 2017
Over the course of 19 days, the best youth orchestras in the world led by great conductors, and flanked by virtuoso soloists, guaranteed exciting and inspiring concert performances at the Young Euro Classical 2017. The festival is known to be the most important platform for international young orchestra musicians in the European classical music tradition, and for its development. This highlight version is a collection of infectiously energizing and outstanding performances by musicians from across the globe. Their repertoire includes renowned classical works as well as local composers. On the program: Verdi - La forza del destino, Beethoven - Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt, Tchaikovsky - Piano Concerto No. 1, Tchaikovsky - Six Romances, Kohji - Georgian, Mingrelian Songs, Weinberg - Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes Op. 47 and Wong - As the Heart Soars.

The Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote his sixth symphony in 1893. This is the last complete symphony Tchaikovsky wrote. The symphony is also known as 'Pathetique' and it's his most well-known symphony these days. Tchaikovsky himself led the premiere in 1893, nine days before he died. The second performance took place 21 days later as a memorial to this great Russian composer. It included some minor corrections that Tchaikovsky had made after the premiere, and was thus the first performance of the work in the exact form in which it is known today. This concert features the Mariinsky Orchestra and conductor Valery Gergiev at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. In 2010, all six Tchaikovsky symphonies were recorded by this Russian combination.
Solos for Clarinet, Part I
The great clarinettist Paolo Beltramini plays a program of solo pieces for clarinet on Stingray Brava. In this broadcast, Beltramini performs C.P.E. Bach’s Solfeggietto, Béla Kovàc’s Hommage à Paganini, and Igor Stravinsky’s Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo. Paolo Beltramini is the only Italian clarinettist to have won first prize at the prestigious Prague Spring International Clarinet Competition (1996). As a duo with pianist Roberto Arosio, he won the International Chamber Music Competitions in Paris (1996) and Trapani (1997). These awards helped establish Beltramini’s reputation as one of the most interesting wind-instrument virtuosos on the international concert circuit. He was principal clarinettist with Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Milan’s Filarmonica della Scala, Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Swiss Orchestra della Svizzera italiana.
Nelsons conducts Berg and Mendelssohn
Andris Nelsons’s starts off his official opening concert as principal conductor of the Gewandhausorchester with the world premiere of Steffen Schleiermacher's 'Relief for Orchestra'. Baiba Skride features as soloist in Alban Berg's Violin Concerto. In the slow finale the solo violin’s line is gradually joined by the rest of the first violin, providing a lovely moment between soloist and orchestra. Skride's encore is Imitatione delle Campane by von Westhoff, a Bach contemporary. The concert closes with a rendition of Mendelssohn Symphony No. 3, Op. 56, known as the 'Scottish' which actually premiered in the Leipzig Gewandhaus in 1842. Recorded on February 22/23, 2018 in the Gewandhaus, Leipzig.
Nino Rota - I due timidi
The 2017 Reate Festival in Rieti, Italy staged two short operas composed by Nino Rota. Known chiefly for his cinema soundtracks and his lifelong relationship with iconic directors such as Federico Fellini, Francis Ford Coppola and Luchino Visconti (to name but a few), Rota was a musical enfant prodige who composed sacred music as well as operas from a very young age. Endowed with a streak of freedom, creativity and imagination that allowed him to forge his own unique style, he succeeded in merging the great Italian operatic tradition of Rossini, Puccini and Verdi with a contemporary musical language, setting himself apart from his contemporaries in the process. I due timidi was broadcast by Milan’s RAI in 1950 and first staged in London in 1952. Based on a text by the Italian screen writer Suso Cecchi D’Amico, it’s a comedy of errors. Although it lacks the usual happy ending, the pace of the musical action and the skills of the young actor-singers make the performance most enjoyable. “The pace of the narration changes continuously: frenzied rhythms suddenly shift to broad vocal declamations à la Puccini, with interludes reminiscent of jazz and the buffo style. Despite the richness and heterogeneity of the musical material, the singers always manage to stay vocally balanced, showing great acting abilities, as well… Conductor Gabriele Bonolis and his orchestra received midperformance applause for an energetic, fresh and brilliant performance.” This version was performed by the Reate Festival Orchestra.
Beethoven - Piano Sonata No. 13, Op. 27, No. 1
Italian pianist Riccardo Schwartz was born in Milan in 1986, and completed his studies at Conservatorio of Milan as a student of acclaimed musicians such as Riccardo Risaliti, Leonardo Leonardi, and Annibale Rebaudengo. He graduated with Honorable Mention and continued his piano studies at the Accademia Pianistica of Imola. Throughout his career, he has had the privilege of performing as a soloist under the baton of outstanding conductors, among the likes of Gustav Kuhn and Yuri Temirkanov. His acclaimed performances include recitals and concertos for piano and orchestra in many prestigious concert halls. One of his best-known successes is the acclaimed concert cycle of Beethoven's 32 Sonatas. This performance features Piano Sonata No. 13 in E-flat major "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 1. The sonata with four movements is known for its subtitle "sonata in the manner of a fantasy". It is argued that this name derives from the lack of breaks to be taken in-between the individual movements and the unusual order of the movements. This recital was recorded in March 2019 at the Fazioli Concert Hall in Sacile.
