Maestro Jaap van Zweden conducts the Orchestre de Paris in a performance of Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47. This performance was recorded at Philharmonie de Paris, France, on March 9, 2016.

Italian pianist Andrea Molteni (1998) performs Alban Berg’s Piano Sonata in B minor, Op. 1. Molteni began studying the piano at the age of six. He graduated with honors and honorable mention at the Conservatorio di musica Giuseppe Verdi di Como, and was awarded a master’s degree Magna cum Laude in Advanced Performance Studies by the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano. He has appeared at the Wiener Saal of the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Scriabin Museum in Moscow, National Opera Center in New York, and several other international venues. This performance was recorded at the Verbrugghen Hall of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Australia, in 2023.

Bass-baritone Matthias Hoffmann (Austria, 1991) and pianist Lisa Ochsendorf (Germany, 1991) perform ‘Il modo di prender morale’ from Franz Schubert’s Drei Lieder, Op. 83, D. 902; ‘Le faune’ from Claude Debussy’s Fêtes galantes II, L. 114; ‘Du alte Ananasbirne’ from Miroslav Srnka’s Dreizehn Lieder; Alphons Diepenbrock’s Simeons lofzang, RC 120; Carl Loewe’s Odins Meeresritt, Op. 118; ‘Nach dem Gewitter’ from Alexander von Zemlinksy’s Acht Lieder, Op. 5; ‘L’heure exquise’ from Reynaldo Hahn’s Sept chansons grises; ‘Silent noon’ from Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The house of life; ‘Ich mag euch alle nicht’ from Wolfgang Rihm’s Neue Alexanderlieder; ‘Betrunken’ from Viktor Ullmann’s Liederbuch des Hafis, Op. 30; and Robert Schumann’s Belsazar, Op. 57, during the final round of the International Vocal Competition 2021 – Lied Duo. This performance was recorded at De Verkadefabriek in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands.

J. S. Bach’s six Brandenburg Concerto’s belong to his best-known works. The composer wrote these concertos between 1711 and 1720 and dedicated them in 1721 to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg. In celebration of the pieces’ 300th anniversary, Czech harpsichordist and conductor Václav Luks and the renowned Baroque ensemble Collegium 1704 recorded all six Brandenburg Concertos on historical instruments in 2021. The concertos are based on the Italian concerto grosso form, in which a group of solo instruments is set against a large ensemble. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos feature remarkable combinations of solo instruments and virtuoso solos. In this performance at the Hall of Mirrors in the Köthen Castle, Germany, Luks and his Collegium 1704 present Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F major, BWV 1047. This piece features trumpet, violin, recorder, and oboe solos. Especially outstanding are the high, virtuoso trumpet parts.

Baritone Samuel Hasselhorn and pianist Daniel Heide perform Franz Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise (‘Winter’s journey’). The 30-year-old Schubert wrote this masterpiece in 1827, just a year before his death. Like Schubert’s earlier song cycle Die schöne Müllerin (1823), Winterreise is a setting of the poetry of Wilhelm Müller (1794-1827). In twenty-four songs, we follow a rejected young man on a lonely journey through a frozen landscape. Wandering as a lost soul, tormented by his memories, the man searches for peace. This performance was recorded at Schloss Wörlitz, part of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, near Dessau, the birthplace and final resting place of Wilhelm Müller.

On the occasion of her 80th birthday, Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich explored chamber music repertoire in a wonderful concert, recorded at Château de Chantilly, France. The ‘Grande Dame’ of the piano is joined by various renowned artists. As part of this concert, violinist Tedi Papavrami, violist Lyda Chen-Argerich, cellist Mischa Maisky, and pianist Lily Maisky perform Johannes Brahms’s Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor, Op. 60.

The documentary “Clara Haskil - Le mystère de l’interprète” (2017) tells the remarkable life story of Romanian pianist Clara Haskil (1895-1960). Born in Bucharest into a Jewish family, she began her career as a child prodigy, entering the Bucharest Conservatory at a very young age. She continued her music studies in Vienna and Paris. Haskil suffered from chronic health issues and lived through two world wars, which held back her career. Only after WWII, Haskil’s fame began to take off and she finally enjoyed international recognition. She performed as a soloist over the world with the foremost orchestras, and collaborated with acclaimed musicians including Eugène Ysaÿe, George Enescu, and Pablo Casals.

After recording all 32 Ludwig van Beethoven piano sonatas to celebrate the composer's 250th birth anniversary, celebrated Italian pianist Riccardo Schwartz decided to record solo piano works by Robert Schumann. In this performance, Schwartz performs Humoreske in B-flat major, Op. 20. Schumann composed the work in 1839 and dedicated it to German-Austrian composer Julie von Webenau. The piece’s title refers to humor as an emotional state. Schumann took his inspiration from German Romantic writer Jean Paul, who defines humor as “an infinity of contrast”, “a setting of the small world beside the great”, and where “a kind of laughter results which contains pain and greatness”. Humoreske is one continuous piece consisting of contrasting sections. Acclaimed pianist Riccardo Schwartz (1986) has performed as a soloist with many world-renowned conductors, including Gustav Kuhn and Yuri Temirkanov. His acclaimed performances include recitals and concertos for piano and orchestra in many prestigious concert halls.

One of the world’s most popular pieces of classical music, Maurice Ravel’s Boléro (1928), was no longer copyrighted as of May 1, 2016. Up to then it had made Ravel and his heirs millions. Ravel died in 1937 and left all he owned to his brother Edouard. Edouard’s death in 1960 unleashed a complex legal battle over the rights, involving among others Edouard’s nurse and her husband. This 2017 documentary gives a fascinating account of what happened to one this iconic piece of music right under the nose of the public. Filmmaker Fabien Caux-Lahalle underpins this investigative story with clips of the Boléro in various guises.

Renowned French string quartet Quatuor Ébène marked the 250th birth anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) with a remarkable project: recording all of the great composer’s sixteen string quartets. For five years, violinists Pierre Colombet and Gabriel Le Magadure, violist Marie Chilemme, and cellist Raphaël Merlin immersed themselves in Beethoven’s 650 pages of sheet music. Their efforts culminated in the performance of the composer’s complete repertoire for string quartet, which covers three decades of Beethoven's musical creativity, during six impressive concerts at Philharmonie de Paris in the autumn of 2020. Quatuor Ébène explored every facet of Beethoven's string quartet repertoire: from the youthful Opus 18 string quartets to the Razumovsky, Harp, and Serioso quartets (Opus 59, 74, and 95) from his middle period, and finally, the depth of his late quartets (Opus 127 to 135). This program features Quatuor Ébène performing Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 2 in G major, Op. 18, No. 2; String Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135; and String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131. This concert was recorded at Philharmonie de Paris on December 16, 2020.

The program is introduced with a short documentation about Schönberg's Pelleas et Melisande, based on a text by Claudio Abbado. Every musical theme relates to a special colour appearing on screen. What has been so remarkable about Abbado’s Mahler performances is that their impact has never been achieved at the expense of the multiple sensitivities, subtleties and extreme sophistication. Together with the world's leading youth orchestra – the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (GMJO) – Abbado performs Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 and Schönberg’s Pelleas und Melisande, Op. 5. The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester was founded in Vienna in 1986, by Abbado’s initiative. The orchestra's high level of artistic quality and its international success have moved important conductors and soloists to work with the ensemble.

Paul Goodwin conducts the Conjunto Barroco of the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid in a Baroque music program featuring works by Georg Muffat, J. S. Bach, and Jean-Philippe Rameau. On the program are Muffat’s Sonata No. 5 in G major, 'Armonico tributo'; Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 4 in D major, BWV 1069; and Rameau’s Suite from the opera ‘Les Boréades’. This performance was recorded at Auditorio Sony of the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, Spain, on February 8, 2024.

A colourful Christmas concert by the South Netherlands Philharmonic with Tchaikovsky’s famous First Piano Concerto. Chief conductor Dmitry Liss showcases, together with master pianist Boris Berezovsky, a true, Russian spirit. In such a way as to evoke what an American critic had said about one of his previous Tchaikovsky interpretations: “Liss expressed an absolute authority over the orchestra and the audience. He displayed a dialogue with eternity”.

The Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, also known simply as Tafelmusik, is a Toronto-based Canadian baroque orchestra, specialised in early music. The ensemble is directed by violinist Jeanne Lamon. In ‘The Galileo Project: Music of the Spheres’ they perform music by Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Bach and Handel to a backdrop of high-definition images from the Hubble telescope, NASA and Canadian astronomers. Explore the fusion of arts, science and culture in the 17th and 18th centuries in this imaginative concert commemorating Galileo’s first public demonstration of the telescope. Actor Shaun Smyth narrates a compelling script while the musicians weave in and around a magical stage set by Marshal Pynkoski. Created and scripted by Alison Mackay.

Misha Fomin performed romantic piano works at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in November 2020. His recital opened with Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 10, Op. 14/2 and Sonata No. 15, Op. 28 'Pastoral'. He continued the program with a performance of Frédéric Chopin's Nocturne Op. 9/1, Etude Op. 25/7, and Johannes Brahms's technically demanding 'Variations on a Theme by Paganini', Op. 35 (Book II). As an encore, Fomin performs Chopin/Liszt's Chant Polonais No. 5 'Meine Freunden'.

Maestro Myung-Whun Chung leads the Orchestra and Chorus of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, along with two vocal soloists, in this impressive performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 in C minor, ‘Resurrection’. Soprano Christiane Karg and alto Claudia Huckle are the soloists. Written between 1888 and 1894, this five-movement symphony is scored for a large orchestra, chorus, and soprano and alto soloists. Mahler explores themes of life, death, and resurrection throughout the symphony. Its first movement resembles a funeral march, while the second, a graceful Ländler, creates a stark contrast with the somber character of the first. The third movement is a Scherzo based on Mahler’s musical setting of ‘Des Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt’ from the collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn. The composer also used another Wunderhorn poem, ‘Urlicht’ (Primal Light), for the fourth movement, incorporating both text and music, sung by the alto. The chorus makes its entrance in the second part of the fifth and final movement with the ‘Resurrection’ chorale. This performance was recorded at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, Italy, in 2021.

On 22 April 2016, Yehudi Menuhin would have celebrated his 100th birthday. One of his most famous students - and one of his best friends - is violinist Daniel Hope. For him, Yehudi Menuhin was the reason he become a violinist. At first, his mother became the secretary of Menuhin when Daniel Hoe and his parents moved to London. Hope grew up in Menuhin's house and learned not only to love music, but also to make the violin a part of his life. Playing the violin every day is like walking every day, or drinking and eating. He played with Menuhin some of Bartok's Duos which was, according to Hope, an introduction to Bartok’s extraordinary music. A piece of Bartok had to be part of this program as well as Ravel's Kaddish, the encore Daniel Hope choose when Menuhin conducted his last concert in Düsseldorf. But this concert starts with Elgar's Violin Concerto. Hope plays with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin under the baton of Iván Fischer.

Italian cellist Silvia Chiesa and Italian pianist Maurizio Baglini perform Franz Liszt’s Two Elegies for cello and piano. This performance was recorded at Sala Verdi of the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan, Italy, on November 4, 2024.

Franz Welser-Möst leads the Cleveland Orchestra in a concert performing Richard Strauss' Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40. Violin soloist is David Radzynski. Recorded at Severance Hall in Cleveland in February 2023. Strauss, at the age of 34, sparked outrage when he cast himself as the central figure of his tone poem. Generally agreed to be autobiographical, the work contains more than thirty quotations from Strauss's earlier works.

The Imperial Ice Stars are an ensemble of 24 world class skaters, holding more than 300 competition medals between them. Praised by critics and audiences alike, they never fail to enchant with creative and powerful story-telling, sumptuous sets, spectacular special effects and opulent costumes. Set to the original score of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece, the Imperial Ice Stars present their 2015 Ice Dance interpretation of Swan Lake, complete with an exhilarating choreography from leading ice director Tony Mercer. “Inspired by my research into Tchaikovsky’s original score and intentions for the story, I wanted to create a more realistic interpretation of this much-loved tale and transpose it onto ice, creating a new art form in the process – ice dance in a full theatrical setting,” the choreographer explains. “I always felt it was a natural fit, to have swans gliding on ice.”

American conductor Michael Tilson Thomas leads the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) in an energetic performance of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's folk-infused Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op. 17. Written in 1872, the work is nicknamed 'Little Russian' as the composer used several folk tunes from Ukraine, then known as ‘Little Russia’. This performance was recorded at LSO St Luke's, London, on May 31, 2021.

Violinists Francesca Dego and Domenico Nordio and pianist Andrea Bacchetti perform Serenade in A major, Op. 92 by Norwegian composer Christian Sinding (1856-1941). Together with Edvard Grieg, Sinding was Norway’s best-known composer at the turn of the century. Composing in the late Romantic style, Sinding’s oeuvre includes a large number of piano pieces, chamber music, and songs. The composer wrote two serenades for two violins and piano: Op. 56 and Op. 92. His Serenade Op. 92 dates from 1909 and consists, like his other Serenade, of five movements. This performance was recorded at Teatro Comunale Città di Vicenza, Italy, on December 2, 2013.
