The shy and elusive Grigroy Sokolov is one of the greatest pianists of our time. His performances leave critics and audiences alike speechless, like they don't quite believe what they have just experienced. In 2015, he played a beautiful recital with works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Frédéric Chopin, and Claude Debussy that took place at the Festival La Roque D'Anthéron in Aix-en-Provence. And just as he was wont to do, Sokolov delivered an unforgettable, magical musical moment. On the program: Bach – Partita for keyboard No. 1, BWV 825, Beethoven – Piano Sonata No. 7 in D major, Schubert – Sonata in a minor op. 143, Schubert – Six Moments Musicaux. The encores are Chopin – Mazurka in A minor, Chopin – Prelude No. 15 and Debussy – Prelude Canope.

Mexican conductor José Areán leads the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería and four vocal soloists in a performance of Gustav Mahler’s cantata ‘The Song of Lamentation’ (Das klagende Lied). Among the soloists are soprano Sally Dibblee, mezzo-soprano Marjorie Elinor Dix, tenor Arturo Chacón, and bass Stephen West. Written between 1878-1880, the work is based on a fairy tale by Ludwig Bechstein and the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm about two brothers, one good and one cruel, who become rivals for a queen’s hand. The story culminates in the murder of the virtuous younger brother and the subsequent discovery of his bones, from which a minstrel makes a flute that sings of the crime. This chilling tale is brought to life in the cantata through music and a minstrel’s flute, which exposes the truth at the royal court. This performance was recorded at Sala Nezahualcóyotl of the Centro Cultural Universitario in Mexico City, in 2012.

The documentary “The Three Lives of Clara Schumann” traces the fascinating life story of German pianist and composer Clara Schumann. Born Clara Wieck in Leipzig in 1819, she was an exceptionally talented pianist, with an impressive international music career. She first met Robert Schumann, whom she married in 1840 and eventually had eight children with, in 1828. Basing itself on her letters and diaries, her compositions, and on accounts from musicians who have intensively studied her music, this 2019 documentary offers a multi-angled perspective on Clara Schumann. It records the various places where she lived, and the cities she visited as a pianist. This thought-provoking film was directed by Andreas Morell and Magdalena Zieba-Schwind.

Mahler's Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) is a deeply personal song cycle for voice and orchestra inspired by Friedrich Rückert's poems about the loss of his children. The work's emotional depth comes from its unflinching portrayal of grief through a powerful juxtaposition of natural imagery and intimate parental pain. Audiences are captivated by the work's profound expression of universal human sorrow and the raw, restrained intensity of Mahler's masterful musical depiction of a parent's pain.

Julijana Sarac performs the first/third movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 21 (“Waldstein”). The work was completed in 1804 and is considered one of Beethoven's greatest and most technically challenging piano sonatas.

Mezzo-soprano Esther Valentin (Germany, 1993) and pianist Anastasia Grishutina (Russia, 1988) perform Henri Duparc’s L’invitation au voyage; Aleksandr Borodin’s ‘Dlya beregov otchizni dal’noy’ (For the shores of thy far native land); ‘Fleur jetée’ from Gabriel Fauré’s Quatre melodies, Op. 39; Franz Schubert’s Die Liebe hat gelogen, Op. 23 No. 1 (D. 751); ‘Begegnung’ and ‘Der Feuerreiter’ from Hugo Wolf’s Mörike-Lieder; Brechtje van Dijk’s ‘Endangered’; and, ‘The crucifixion’ from Samuel Barber’s Hermit songs, Op. 29, during the final round of the International Vocal Competition 2019 – Lied Duo. This performance was recorded at Theater aan de Parade in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands.

Andreas Spering conducts Philharmonie Zuidnederland in a performance of "Overture Rosamunde" (D. 644), by Franz Schubert (1797-1828). Recorded in Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, the Netherlands in 2015. Schubert initially composed the Overture for Georg Ernst von hofmann's play 'Die Zauberharfe' ('The Magic Harp'), which premiered on August 19, 1820. Three years later, the overture was used again, this time for Helmina von Chézy's play Rosemunde. Chézy's (1783-1856) librettos enjoyed little succes, and it is said that Schubert's contribution to Rosamunde saved the production.

Renowned French string quartet Quatuor Ébène marked the 250th birth anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) with a remarkable project: recording all of the great composer’s sixteen string quartets. For five years, violinists Pierre Colombet and Gabriel Le Magadure, violist Marie Chilemme, and cellist Raphaël Merlin immersed themselves in Beethoven’s 650 pages of sheet music. Their efforts culminated in the performance of the composer’s complete repertoire for string quartet, which covers three decades of Beethoven's musical creativity, during six impressive concerts at Philharmonie de Paris in the autumn of 2020. Quatuor Ébène explored every facet of Beethoven's string quartet repertoire: from the youthful Opus 18 string quartets to the Razumovsky, Harp, and Serioso quartets (Opus 59, 74, and 95) from his middle period, and finally, the depth of his late quartets (Opus 127 to 135). This program features Quatuor Ébène performing Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 7 in F major, Op. 59, No. 1, known as “Razumovsky”; String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat major, Op. 130; and the monumental Great Fugue, Op. 133. This concert performance was recorded at Philharmonie de Paris on October 12, 2020.

Conductor Marien van Staalen leads Amadeus Ensemble Rotterdam in a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622. Henk de Graaf is the featured soloist. This performance was recorded at St. Nicholas Church in Vollenhove, the Netherlands.

Olivier Latry is the current holder of the Great Organ of Notre Dame. Between its original religious function and the interest of composers of all times, the great organ Cavaillé-Coll reveals its absolute modernity. Latry is considered one of the greatest organists of his generation, both in France and internationally. He sees himself as an ambassador of French music from the 17th through the 20th centuries as well as an advocate for the art of improvisation. Pieces played in the film are: Pierre Cochereau’s Boléro, Louis Vierne’s Carillon of Westminster and Scherzo from Symphony No. 2, Alexandre Guilmant’s Sonata No. 1, Charles-Marie Widor’s Gothic Symphony, Marcel Dupre’s Cortège, Litanie and J. S. Bach’s Passacaille & Fugue.

After recording all 32 Ludwig van Beethoven piano sonatas to celebrate the composer's 250th birth anniversary, celebrated Italian pianist Riccardo Schwartz decided to record solo piano works by Robert Schumann. In this performance, Schwartz presents Schumann’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22. The composer completed the work in 1838. Of Schumann’s three piano sonatas, Piano Sonata No. 2 is performed and recorded most frequently. It opens with an energetic first movement, followed by a beautiful, slow Andantino based on Schumann’s song ‘Im Herbste’ (1828). The third movement is a short Scherzo. At the request of his future spouse, Clara, the composer replaced the original finale by a less demanding movement. Acclaimed pianist Riccardo Schwartz (1986) has performed as a soloist with many world-renowned conductors, including Gustav Kuhn and Yuri Temirkanov. His acclaimed performances include recitals and concertos for piano and orchestra in many prestigious concert halls.
