Every two years, promising young vocalists gather in Wales’s capital city to take part in one of the world’s most prestigious singing competitions: the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Past editions have helped launch the careers of some of the biggest stars in opera, including Karita Mattila, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Bryn Terfel. This October, Stingray Classica continues broadcasting the renowned singing competition, presenting edition 2013’s Song Prize Final, and the first three rounds of edition 2015. Tune in on Friday evenings in October at 21:00 CEST and enjoy these wonderful performances by all competitors. Repeats of these programs air on Sunday evenings in October at 21:00 CE(S)T.

Past editions have helped launch the careers of some of the biggest stars in opera, including Karita Mattila, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Bryn Terfel. This fourth broadcast features the 2013 edition of the renowned competition, in which twenty young opera singers compete for their chance to become the next international opera star. Enjoy the performances of the last five competitors. Host Petroc Trelawny, along with vocal coach and singer Mary King, and former winner of the BBC Cardiff competition, baritone Tommi Hakala, then evaluate the contestants’ performances. In this episode, the following young singers take the stage: baritone Michał Partyka (Poland, 1985), tenor Ben Johnson (England, 1983), mezzosoprano Daniela Mack (Argentina, 1982), bass-baritone Jeongcheol Cha (South Korea, 1981), and soprano Teresa Romano (Italy, 1985). All participants are accompanied by the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera under the baton of British conductor Graeme Jenkins, recorded at St David’s Hall in Cardiff, Wales.
BBC CSOTW 2013 - Song Prize Final

This broadcast features the 2013 edition of the renowned competition, showing the five finalists competing for the competition’s Song Prize. Host Petroc Trelawny, along with soprano Ailish Tynan and mezzosoprano Bernada Fink, then evaluate the contestants’ accomplishments.
