Fridays and Sundays in December

Every two years, promising young vocalists gather in Wales’s capital city to take part in one of the world’s most prestigious singing competitions: the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Past editions have helped launch the careers of some of the biggest stars in opera, including Karita Mattila, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Bryn Terfel. This December, Stingray Classica continues broadcasting the renowned singing competition, this time presenting the 2017 edition. Tune in on Friday evenings in December at 21:00 CET and enjoy wonderful performances by all the competitors. Repeats of these programs air on Sunday afternoons in December at 14:00 CET.


BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017 - Round 1

December 1 and 3 | 21:00 and 14:00

Every two years, promising young vocalists gather in Wales’ capital city to take part in one of the world’s most prestigious singing competitions: the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Past editions have helped launch the careers of some of the biggest stars in opera, including Karita Mattila, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Bryn Terfel. This broadcast features the 2017 edition of the renowned competition, in which twenty young opera singers compete for their chance to become the next international opera star. Enjoy the performances of the first five competitors. s. Host Petroc Trelawny, along with soprano Lucy Crowe and tenor Lawrence Brownlee, then evaluate the contestants’ performances. In this episode, the following young singers take the stage: bass-baritone Roberto Lorenzi (Italy, 1989), mezzosoprano Nadezhda Karyazina (Russia, 1986), baritone Anthony Clark Evans (USA), mezzosoprano Lilly Jørstad (Norway, 1986), and tenor Batjargal Bayarsaikhan (Mongolia, 1990). All participants are accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under the baton of Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård, recorded at St David’s Hall in Cardiff, Wales.


BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017 - Round 2

December 8 and 10 | 21:00 and 14:00

This broadcast features the 2017 edition of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Enjoy the performances of the five competitors of the second round. Host Petroc Trelawny, along with vocal coach and singer Mary King, and soprano Rosemary Joshua, then evaluate the contestants’ performances. In this episode, the following young singers take the stage: baritone Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar (Mongolia, 1988), mezzosoprano Miriam Albano (Italy, 1991), baritone Ivan Thirion (Belgium, 1990), mezzosoprano Sioned Gwen Davies (Wales), and tenor Konstantin Lee (South Korea, 1988). All participants are accompanied by the Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera under the baton of Czech conductor Tomáš Hanus, recorded at St David’s Hall in Cardiff, Wales.


BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017 - Round 3

December 15 and 17 | 21:00 and 14:00

This broadcast features the 2017 edition of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Enjoy the performances of the five competitors of the third round. Host Petroc Trelawny, along with vocal coach and singer Mary King, and baritone Jacques Imbrailo, former winner of the competition’s Audience Prize, then evaluate the contestants’ performances. In this episode, the following young singers take the stage: baritone John Chest (USA, 1985), soprano Louise Alder (England, 1986), baritone Iurii Samoilov (Ukraine, 1988), mezzosoprano Ezgi Karakaya (Turkey, 1989), and tenor Lukhanyo Moyake (South Africa, 1986). All participants are accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under the baton of Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård, recorded at St David’s Hall in Cardiff, Wales.


BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017 - Round 4

December 22 and 24 | 21:00 and 14:00

This broadcast features the 2017 edition of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Enjoy the performances of the five competitors of the last round. Host Petroc Trelawny, along with vocal coach and singer Mary King, and soprano Joan Rodgers, then evaluate the contestants’ performances. In this episode, the following young singers take the stage: soprano Anush Hovhannisyan (Armenia, 1986), bass Dominic Barberi (England, 1988), mezzosoprano Catriona Morison (Scotland, 1986), tenor Kang Wang (Australia, 1988), and soprano Barnokhon Ismatullaeva (Uzbekistan, 1991). All participants are accompanied by the Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera under the baton of Czech conductor Tomáš Hanus, recorded at St David’s Hall in Cardiff, Wales.


BBC CSOTW 2017 - Main Prize Final

December 29 and 31 | 21:00 and 14:00

This broadcast features the 2017 edition of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, showing the five finalists competing for the Main Prize. Host Petroc Trelawny, along with soprano Danielle de Niese and bass-baritone Gerald Finley, then evaluate the contestants’ performances. In this episode, the following young singers take the stage: baritone Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar (Mongolia, 1988), soprano Louise Alder (England, 1986), tenor Kang Wang (Australia, 1988), mezzosoprano Catriona Morison (Scotland, 1986), and baritone Anthony Clark Evans (USA).
