Chamber Music Premieres

Wednesday in November

On Wednesday evenings in November, Stingray Classica broadcasts brand-new chamber music performances. On November 4, a special concert event celebrates the diversity and richness of Canada through the eyes and ears of its people. The Ensemble Made in Canada’s Mosaïque Project features a commissioned suite of piano quartets by fourteen Canadian composers, each inspired by a region of that vast country. On Wednesday, November 11 and 18, Stingray Classica continues the chamber music special with two renditions of celebrated chamber music works performed by the well-known Ébène Quartet, in which Gabriel Fauré’s Piano Quartet No. 2 is followed by Robert Schumann's Piano Quartet, Op. 47 - the so-called "creative double" of his Piano Quintet. Schumann's Piano Quartet is among the most frequently performed piano quartets in the repertoire.

Mosaïque Project - Canadian Piano Quartets

Wednesday, 4 November

This very special concert event celebrates the diversity and richness of Canada through the eyes and ears of its people. Ensemble Made in Canada’s Mosaique Project features a commissioned suite of piano quartets by 14 Canadian composers, each inspired by a region of our vast country. Their album release and two-year National tour culminate in St. Catharines’ stunning Partridge Hall! The ensemble consists of Elissa Lee (violin) Sharon Wei (viola), Rachel Mercer (cello) and Angela Park (piano) and is rapidly gaining recognition as Canada’s premier piano quartet.

Gabriel Fauré - Piano Quartet No. 2, Op. 45

Wednesday, 11 November

The Ébène Quartet, consisting of Daishin Kashimoto (violin), Lise Berthaud (alto), François Salque (cello) and Eric Le Sage (piano), performs Gabriel Fauré Piano Quartet No. 2, Op. 45 at the Museum of Modern Art of Louisiana. It is one of the two chamber works Fauré composed for piano quartet. Fauré adopts the classical four-movement structure: the opening Allegro is followed by a scherzo, slow movement, and finale.

Robert Schumann - Piano Quartet, Op. 47

Wednesday, 18 November

The Ébène Quartet, consisting of Daishin Kashimoto (violin), Lise Berthaud (viola), François Salque (cello), and Eric Le Sage (piano), performs Robert Schumann's Piano Quartet, Op. 47. The quartet was completed in 1842 and has been described as the "creative double" of Schumann's Piano Quintet, which is also in the key of E-flat major. It is perhaps the most frequently performed piano quartets in the repertoire. The work was composed during Schumann’s “Chamber Music Year,” in which he concentrated a whole year on the genre, writing three string quartets and a piano quintet in addition to this piano quartet. This performance is recorded at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark.
