Jan Hugo Voříšek – 200th Death Anniversary
Wednesday, November 19
Wednesday, November 19 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Jan Václav Hugo Voříšek (1791-1825). Voříšek was an exceptionally talented pianist and promising young composer, who left his native Bohemia for Vienna in 1813 to pursue his musical ambitions. His oeuvre consists mostly of piano compositions, but also includes some orchestral works and vocal music. In tribute to the Czech composer, Stingray Classica presents a wonderful performance of his 1823 Symphony in D major, Op. 23, by the Gewandhausorchester under the baton of maestro Herbert Blomstedt. Although the composition – Voříšek’s only symphony – was never performed during the composer’s lifetime, it has since become one of his most-performed works.
