Johann Strauss II – 200th Anniversary

October 25 and 26

October 25, 2025 marks the 200th birth anniversary of Austrian composer Johann Strauss II (1825-1899). He was born in Vienna as the eldest son of Johann Strauss I and Maria Anna Streim. His father was already an established composer and conductor, famous for his waltzes and dance music. Despite his father’s wishes for him to follow a different career path, Strauss II decided to pursue music. He became known as the ‘Waltz King’, composing over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas. In celebration of the composer’s anniversary, Stingray Classica presents four wonderful broadcasts dedicated to Strauss’s music on Saturday, October 25, and Sunday, October 26. Firstly, on October 25 at 21:00, the ensemble The Philharmonics pays tribute to the music of Vienna, performing arrangements of five popular waltzes by Strauss II. Following this, the Orchester Wiener Akademie performs well-known pieces by the Strauss family, including ‘The Blue Danube’ and ‘Radetzky March’, in the breathtaking surroundings of Vienna's Hofburg Palace. On October 26 at 21:00, Stingray Classica presents the wonderful Strauss Gala, in which the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Zubin Mehta performs a selection of classics and popular operetta melodies by Strauss, both father and son. The Strauss II birthday special closes with the documentary ‘The Waltz King’, which explores the origins of the waltz—the music, the dance steps, the ballrooms, and the costumes—and how this rich story is inseparable from that of the Strauss family.

A Tribute to Vienna

Saturday, October 25 | 21:00

Chamber music ensemble The Philharmonics pays tribute to the music of Vienna in this March 9, 2011 concert from Vienna's Café Sperl. The ensemble, which consists of musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, performs arrangements of five popular waltzes by Johann Straus II. Among them are Kaiser-Walzer, Op. 437, and Schatz-Walzer, Op. 418, from the operetta The Gypsy Baron. In May 1921, the likes of Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg, and Anton Webern wrote these chamber music arrangements to raise funds for their Society for Private Musical Performances. Although both the concert and the auction of the scores were very successful, the Society eventually went under. In addition to these pieces by Strauss, The Philharmonics perform works by Fritz Kreisler, Leopold Godowsky, as well as The Philharmonics's first violinist, Tibor Kováč. The program comes to an end with Godowsky’s tribute to the city: Alt Wien.

A Night in Vienna

Saturday, October 25 | 22:05

A Night in Vienna recreates the magical atmosphere of 19th century Viennese ballrooms. In the breathtaking surroundings of Vienna's Hofburg Palace, the Wiener Akademie period orchestra, conducted by Alfred Eschwe, plays some of the Strauss family's and Joseph Lanner's favorite pieces, including "The Beautiful Blue Danube", "Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka", and the "Radetzky March". Former residence of the Habsburg dynasty, the Hofburg contained the apartments of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elizabeth. A Night in Vienna features soloist Lesley Garrett, the most popular soprano from the UK. The spirit of the Strauss era is perfectly recreated by the addition of waltz dancers adorned with historical costumes. This concert was presented in 2004, under the direction of David Amphlett.

Strauss Gala

Sunday, October 26 | 21:00

Maestro Zubin Mehta invites you to an evening of polkas, waltzes, and operetta melodies under the Viennese skies. During the Strauss Gala, Mehta and the Wiener Philharmoniker sweep through a selection of popular operetta melodies by Johann Strauss. The world-famous tenor José Carreras and the compelling lyric soprano Andrea Rost interpret such highlights as Wiener Blut, and songs from Der Zigeunerbaron. This concert was recorded at the Heldenplatz in Vienna in 1999.

The Waltz King

Sunday, October 26 | 22:45

At the beginning of the 19th century, Europe was set alight by a shocking new dance craze: the waltz. The story of the waltz is inseparable from the story of the Strauss family. This docudrama, entertainingly presented by Lesley Garrett, tells their story. Composers Strauss Sr. and Strauss Jr., who both held the public title of "The Waltz King", were uneasy rivals in their private life. Strauss Sr., born in 1804, was a hugely popular composer, who transformed the waltz from a simple dance into a Viennese cultural phenomenon. Yet his reputation was entirely eclipsed by his eldest son, who took the waltz to a whole new musical level, writing The Blue Danube and several other pieces. However, in his own mind, Strauss Jr. never quite escaped the shadow of his father. Lesley Garrett explores the origins of the waltz - the music, the dance steps, the ballrooms, and the costumes, while narrating the bitter conflict between a father and a son. This rich and compelling story is lavishly illustrated with the music and dancing of the time, recreated at Vienna's sumptuous Hofburg Palace.
