Piano Premieres

Fridays in September

In September, Stingray Classica presents a series of prestigious piano premieres. Every Friday night, let distinguished soloists enchant you with their interpretations of the most celebrated pieces for piano of all time! On Friday, September 3, Russian pianist Misha Fomin performs romantic piano works at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, recorded in November of 2020. The following week, Roberto Prosseda performs an atmospheric piano recital at the Teatro Verdi in Pisa. His program is dedicated to the classical subgenre of the nocturne, a musical composition inspired by the night, featuring a lyrical melody over a bassline with chord accompaniment. Prosseda’s performance is followed by another concert at a picturesque location in Italy. In a solo recital from the Chiesa del Collegio dei Gesuiti in Trapani, Costantino Catena interprets romantic piano works by Franz Liszt. On Friday, September 17, Mikhail Pletnev leads the Russian National Orchestra (RNO) in a performance of Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto No. 1 with Lucas Debargue as the soloist. The final Piano Premiere this month takes place on September 24, with sparkling interpretations of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 11 and No. 2, Op. 21, by pianists Nikolai Demidenko and Evgeny Kissin, accompanied by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Antoni Wit.

Misha Fomin at the Concertgebouw

Friday, September 3 | 21:00

Misha Fomin performed romantic piano works at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in November 2020. His recital opened with Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 10, Op. 14/2 and Sonata No. 15, Op. 28 'Pastoral'. He continued the program with a performance of Frédéric Chopin's Nocturne Op. 9/1, Etude Op. 25/7, and Johannes Brahms's technically demanding 'Variations on a Theme by Paganini', Op. 35 (Book II). As an encore, Fomin performs Chopin/Liszt's Chant Polonais No. 5 'Meine Freunden'.

Nocturnes by Chopin and Guastella

Friday, September 10 | 21:00

The nocturne is a musical composition inspired by the night, featuring a lyrical melody over a bassline with chord accompaniment. Irish composer John Field is considered the founder of the genre, but Frédéric Chopin's Nocturnes are the most popular examples of this format. Italian pianist Roberto Prosseda devised a nocturne-themed recital program for his January 2021 piano recital at the Teatro Verdi in Pisa. He selected Chopin's three Nocturnes, Op. 9, two Waltzes from Op. 64, and two Nocturnes, Op. 27. The program continues with 'Quello che resta', a nocturne by Virginia Guastella (1979). As encore, Prosseda performs Chopin's Nocturne No. 20 in C-sharp minor, Op. post.

Liszt - Années de pèlerinage: Italie (S. 161)

Friday, September 10 | 21:45

Costantino Catena performs selected works from Franz Liszt's Second book from Années de pèlerinage (Italy), S. 161. The program starts with three Sonneti del Petrarca (47, 104, and 123) followed by Après une lecture de Dante: Fantasia Quasi Sonata. The performance closes with renditions of Gondoliera (Gondelier's Song), Canzone, and Tarantella. Recorded at the Chiesa del Collegio dei Gesuiti in Trapani, Italy. Années de pèlerinage, a set of three piano suites, is considered a piano masterwork and summation of Liszt's musical style. The composer places these compositions in line with the Romantic literature of his time, prefacing most pieces with a literary passage.

Pletnev conducts Bizet & Ravel's Concerto No. 1

Friday, September 17 | 21:00

Mikhail Pletnev leads the Russian National Orchestra (RNO) in a performance of Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto No. 1 with Lucas Debargue as the soloist. The concert opens with a selection of music by Georges Bizet based on Alphonse Daudet's play 'L'Arlésienne'. The music is compiled by Mikhail Pletnev. The first movement of Ravel's Piano Concerto No. 1 contains five distinctive themes, of which three are reminiscent of jazz. Debargue's performance of Ravel's concerto is followed by Gabriel Fauré's Barcarolle No. 4. The performance was recorded at Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow as part of the Ninth RNO Grand Festival.

Chopin - Piano Concertos No. 1 & No. 2

Friday, September 24 | 21:00

Antoni Wit conducts the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra in performances of Chopin's Piano Concertos No. 1, Op. 11 and No. 2, Op. 21. Soloists are Nikolai Demidenko and Evgeny Kissin. After performing the first concerto, Demidenko encores with Chopin's Mazurka Op. 17/4. Kissin closes the concert with Chopin's Etude Op. 10/12 and the Waltz in E minor, Op. post. This concert was part of the celebration of Chopin's 200th anniversary in 2010. Chopin composed the second concerto one year before the Concerto No. 1 and completed both works at the age of 20, before leaving his home country Poland and moving to Paris.
