The London Symphony Orchestra presents Mahler

Saturdays in December

This December, Stingray Classica premieres a series of unparalleled performances by the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), presenting masterpieces by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) on three Saturday evenings at 21:00. On December 6, Sir Simon Rattle leads the LSO, mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená, and tenor Andrew Staples in a magnificent performance of Mahler’s song cycle Das Lied von der Erde. Written in the final years of his life following the tragic death of his daughter, the work wrestles with the transience of life, contrasting moments of vivacity and happiness with deep introspection and melancholy. On December 13, under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas, the LSO performs Mahler’s mighty Symphony No. 5. Enter a world of midnight storms, joyous horn-calls, and what is possibly the most tender love letter ever written without words: the heart-rending Adagietto. Finally, on December 20, Kirill Karabits conducts the LSO in a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. Soprano Lucy Crowe joins the orchestra for the fourth and final movement, bringing her insight and vocal radiance to its extraordinary finale.

Written in the final years of his life, Mahler’s masterpiece contemplates the beauty of life and the sorrow of parting through some of his most personal and beautiful symphonic writing. Written in the final years of his life and following the tragic death of his daughter, Mahler wrestles with the transience of life, contrasting moments of vivacity and happiness with introspection and melancholy. This performance was recorded at the Barbican Hall in London, UK, on May 9, 2021.

American ‘Conductor Laureate’ Michael Tilson Thomas leads the London Symphony Orchestra in a program of romantic masterworks. The concert opens with Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1, featuring the brilliant Czech pianist Lukáš Vondráček as soloist. Mahler - Symphony No. 4

Saturday, December 20 | 21:00

Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits leads the London Symphony Orchestra in a stunning performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. The soloist is soprano Lucy Crowe. Mahler’s Fourth Symphony opens with the sound of sleighbells and melodies of childlike innocence. But between this deceptively playful opening and the serene finale – a child’s vision of Heaven – lies a world of profound emotion and beauty. With soprano Lucy Crowe lending her vocal radiance to this extraordinary finale, the symphony’s journey to bliss is complete. This performance was recorded at the Barbican Hall in London, UK, on December 8, 2021.
