The London Symphony Orchestra presents Tchaikovsky

Saturdays in November

In November, Stingray Classica premieres four impressive performances by the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) on Saturday evenings at 21:00. This time, the LSO presents masterpieces by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The series begins on November 1, when Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma brings lyricism and fire to Tchaikovsky’s virtuoso Violin Concerto in D major. The acclaimed violinist is accompanied by the LSO under the baton of Gianandrea Noseda. On November 8, Michael Tilson Thomas conducts the orchestra in a pleasing performance of Tchaikovsky's folk-infused Symphony No. 2 in C minor. One week later, on November 15, Marta Gardolińska leads the LSO in a concert featuring Tchaikovsky’s emotionally gripping Symphony No. 4 in F minor. The series concludes on November 22, as the LSO, under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle, presents enchanting selections from Act II of Tchaikovsky’s beloved ballet, The Nutcracker.

Tchaikovsky – Violin Concerto, Op. 35

Saturday, November 1 | 21:00

Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma brings lyricism and fire to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s virtuosic Violin Concerto, joining conductor Gianandrea Noseda and the London Symphony Orchestra. Tchaikovsky wrote the piece in 1878 on the shores of Lake Geneva, collaborating closely with his former student and lover, violinist Iosif Kotek. The composer initially intended to dedicate the piece to the young Kotek, but eventually dedicated it to another violinist, Leopold Auer, as he was afraid of the gossip the dedication would cause. This performance was recorded at the Barbican Hall in London, UK, on April 10, 2022.

Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 2, Op. 17

Saturday, November 8 | 21:00

American conductor Michael Tilson Thomas leads the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) in an energetic performance of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's folk-infused Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op. 17. Written in 1872, the work is nicknamed 'Little Russian' as the composer used several folk tunes from Ukraine, then known as ‘Little Russia’. This performance was recorded at LSO St Luke's, London, on May 31, 2021.

The LSO performs Boulanger, Dalbavie & Tchaikovsky

Saturday, November 15 | 21:00

Polish conductor Marta Gardolińska conducts the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) in a concert program consisting of Lili Boulanger’s D’un Martin de Printemps, Marc-André Dalbavie’s Concerto for Flute, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36. The luminous optimism of the young Boulanger is poles apart from the raw passion and white-hot melodies of Tchaikovsky’s semi-autobiographical symphony. LSO principal flute Gareth Davies brings out all the dazzle and daring of Dalbavie's 21st-century classic. The program closes with Prayer for Ukraine by composer Valentin Silvestrov. This concert was recorded at LSO St Luke’s in London, UK, on May 18, 2022.

The LSO performs Dvořák and Tchaikovsky

Saturday, November 22 | 21:00

Sir Simon Rattle conducts the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) in a concert program consisting of Antonín Dvořák’s Scherzo Capriccioso in D-flat major, Op. 66, and selections from Act II of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet The Nutcracker (1892). Dvořák’s Scherzo Capriccioso (1883) reflects a period of personal crisis for the composer. The work betrays ever-changing moods and a constant sense of inner restlessness. In the music of The Nutcracker, Tchaikovsky combined memorable melodies with colorful orchestration, which has enchanted listeners for decades. This performance was recorded at LSO St Luke’s in London, UK, on March 18, 2021.
