October Opera Premieres

Sundays in October

In October, Stingray Classica offers two premieres of magnificent operas: Sergei Prokofiev’s “The Love For Three Oranges” and Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca”. Prokofiev's satirical masterpiece, which was based on Carlo Gozzi’s play L'amore delle tre melarance, comes to you in a sparkling production from the Opéra national de Paris. Documentary maker Reiner E. Moritz was on hand to provide a revealing look behind the scenes in the insightful making-of film that directly precedes the opera's broadcast on Sunday, October 18. The following week, Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic shine in a phenomenal interpretation of Puccini’s “Tosca”, recorded at the Easter Festival 2017 in Baden-Baden. "Tosca" will cast its spell over you with its suspense-packed story and the unparalleled vocal wizardry of world-renowned soloists Kristine Opolais (Tosca) and Marcelo Álvarez (Mario Cavaradossi).

Prokofiev - The Love for Three Oranges

Sunday, 18 October

Sylvain Cambreling conducts the Choir and Orchestra of the Paris Opera in a performance of Sergei Prokofiev's The Love for Three Oranges, Op. 33, also known by its French -language title L'amour des trois oranges. The satirical opera by Prokofiev was based on the Italian play L'amore delle tre melarance by Carlo Gozzi and premiered at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, on 30 December 1921. This 2006 production is directed by Gilbert Deflo. Among the soloists are Philippe Rouillon, Charles Workman, Hannah Esther Minutillo, and Guillaume Antoine. Deflo's production for the Opera Paris turns Prokofiev's work into a fast-moving, commedia dell'arte inspired show. The composer excels in finding the right melodic gesture and instrumental clothing to match the characters. Director Deflo delivers Prokofiev's stylised characters, speed, rhythmic power in an almost cinematographic approach.

Puccini - Tosca

Sunday, 18 October

For the Easter Festival 2017 in Baden-Baden, Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker draw their inspiration from Tosca, the most well-known and most brilliant of all the Puccini operas. And that is deservedly so since Tosca is not merely a work of art, but also a gripping suspense-packed story. The opera premiered in 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. The three-act opera is based on an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. For this performance, Philipp Himmelmann created a spectacular staging that offers a new view of this beloved classic. With Kristine Opolais as Tosca and Marcelo Álvarez as Mario Cavaradossi.
