Valentine’s Day

Monday, February 14

Romance is in the air on Stingray Classica! On Valentine’s Day, Stingray Classica presents three broadcasts that include passionate dance performances and romantic arias. The special opens with the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet performed by The Monte Carlo Ballet, recorded at the Victoria Eugenia Theater in San Sebastian, Spain. Relying on Hector Berlioz’s symphonie dramatique, choreographer Thierry Malandain manages to create a modern version of the compelling love story. In the afternoon, Stingray Classica broadcasts Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, telling the story of illicit affection between a knight and the wife of his king. Enjoy one of Wagner’s greatest operas performed by the Metropolitan Opera. In the evening, you can enjoy some of the most romantic arias in the repertoire performed by award winning soprano Renée Fleming during the 2010 edition of the Waldbühne concert, titled Night of Love. She is accompanied by the Berliner Philharmoniker led by Ion Marin.

Romeo and Juliet

Monday, February 14 | 10:00

The original version of the ballet Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev is based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Music from the ballet was extracted by Prokofiev as three suites for orchestra and as a piano work. In this film Romeo and Juliet, also inspired by Shakespeare, tensions run high in the choir, and the visual imagery is fluid and strong, just like the music. Thierry Malandain’s choreography features arabesques, pirouettes, and jumps constantly broken and redistributed in an urgent motion. The music of this performance is composed by Hector Berlioz. Performers are part of the Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo and the performance took place at the Victoria Eugenia Theater in Spain.

Wagner - Tristan und Isolde

Monday, February 14 | 14:00

Wagner's iconic tale of love and death holds a firm place amongst the greatest operatic works in history. Based on popular European medieval myth, Tristan and Isolde tells the story of illicit affection between a knight and the wife of his king. Wagner transcends the illusion of daily reality throughout this drama, revering the ultimate truths of life and the supernatural power of love. The famed “Tristan chord” heard repeatedly throughout this piece is exemplary of the composer's approach to the leitmotif technique, communicating a sense of irresistible yearning that cannot possibly be filled in this life. This performance features Stuart Skelton (tenor), Nina Stemme (soprano) and René Pape (bass). It was recorded at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, United States, in 2016.

Waldbühne 2010 - Nacht der Liebe

Monday, February 14 | 21:00

Her career has been built on success across a wide range of musical styles, but she is best known for her excellence in opera and lieder worldwide.
