The Archive - John Barbirolli
This episode of ‘The Archive’ pays homage to Sir John Barbirolli. This internationally renowned British conductor gave a new start to the Hallé Orchestra, one of the oldest British orchestras. Moreover, it’s with this orchestra that he performs three pieces recorded in 1962 in Manchester’s Free Trade Hall, where we are invited to in this episode. First, we see a performance of Berlioz’s ‘The Corsair, Overture for Orchestra’. Then the French cellist André Navarra enters the stage to astound us with Schumann’s ‘Concerto for cello in A minor, op.129’. The program closes with a performance of Antonín Dvorák’s ‘Scherzo Capriccioso, op.66’.
