The Archive - Herbert von Karajan
This episode of The Archive presents the conductor Herbert von Karajan. Appointed in 1955 to the lifelong post of music director to the Berlin Philharmonic, he accepted in 1969 to become music advisor to the Orchestre de Paris with whom he built a strong relationship in the space of two years. In 1971, during the recording of the Symphonie Fanstastique by Berlioz, Karajan exceptionally allowed a camera team directed by Roger Benamou to film his work with the orchestra. Benamou’s cinematographic style and play on colours and camera angles is unusual, and reflects the style of the conductor, who, as opposed to his French predecessor Charles Munch, gives a Germanic flavour to the symphony.
