Antonio Mormone International Prize

Tuesdays in June

Acclaimed classical music talent scout Antonio Mormone (1930-2017) lives on as the name-giver of the Premio Internazionale Antonio Mormone, awarded to the winner of the Italian music competition of the same name. This June, Stingray Classica continues to broadcast the first edition of this competition, which centered around the piano and was held from 2019 to 2021. Out of ninety-four candidates, ten pianists were selected for a second round, each performing two public recitals at various venues in Milan. The three most promising talents made it to the final round. Enjoy sparkling performances by fresh and exciting new pianists on Stingray Classica on Tuesdays in June at 21:00 CEST.


PIAM - Semi-final I: Chopin and Scriabin

As part of the Premio Internazionale Antonio Mormone (PIAM), Micah McLaurin (USA, 1994) performs Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 27 No. 2, and Barcarolle, Op. 60; and a selection of Alexander Scriabin’s Etudes: Op. 42 No. 5, and Op. 8 Nos. 11 and 12. This performance was recorded at Teatro EDI Barrio’s in Milan, in January 2020.


PIAM - Semi-final II: Liszt and Chopin

As part of the Premio Internazionale Antonio Mormone (PIAM), Micah McLaurin (USA, 1994) performs various works by Franz Liszt: Liebestraum No. 3 in A-flat major; Liszt’s arrangement of Robert Schumann’s Widmung S.566; Funérailles from the cycle Harmonies poétiques et religieuses; Sonetto 104 del Petrarca from Années de Pèlerinage II; and Mephisto Waltz No. 1. As an encore, McLaurin plays Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2. This performance was recorded at Auditorium Giorgio Gaber in Milan, in January 2020.


PIAM - Semi-final I: Liszt and Ravel

As part of the Premio Internazionale Antonio Mormone (PIAM), Josef Edoardo Mossali (Italy, 2001) performs Franz Liszt’s Après une Lecture de Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata; Maurice Ravel’s Toccata from Le tombeau de Couperin; and Etude No. 3 “La Campanella” from Liszt’s Six Grandes études de Paganini. This performance was recorded at Teatro EDI Barrio’s in Milan, in February 2020.


PIAM - Semi-final II: Chopin, Brahms and Liszt

As part of the Premio Internazionale Antonio Mormone (PIAM), Josef Edoardo Mossali (Italy, 2001) performs Frédéric Chopin’s collection of 12 Etudes, Op. 25, and Johannes Brahms’s Variations on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 35, Book II. As an encore, Mossali plays Etude No. 3 “La Campanella” from Franz Liszt’s Six Grandes études de Paganini. This performance was recorded at Nuovo Teatro Ariberto in Milan, in June 2021.


PIAM - Semi-final: Franck, Ravel and Prokofiev

As part of the Premio Internazionale Antonio Mormone (PIAM), Piotr Pawlak (Poland, 1998) performs César Franck’s Prelude, Chorale and Fugue in B minor; Maurice Ravel’s Pavane pour une infant défunte; and Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 4 in C minor, Op. 29. As an encore, Pawlak plays J. S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in C major, BWV 846; the final fugue from Leopold Godowsky’s Passacaglia in B minor; and Frédéric Chopin’s Etude in C-sharp minor, Op. 10 No. 4. This performance was recorded at Auditorium Giorgio Gaber in Milan, in November 2019.


PIAM - Final: Beethoven and Brahms

During the final round of the Premio Internazionale Antonio Mormone (PIAM), Piotr Pawlak (Poland, 1998) performs Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata No. 28 in A major, Op. 101, and Johannes Brahms's Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5. This performance was recorded at Sala Verdi of the Conservatory of Milan, in July 2021.


PIAM - Semi-final: Rameau, Liszt and Chopin

Tuesday, June 27 | 21:00

As part of the Premio Internazionale Antonio Mormone (PIAM), Leonardo Pierdomenico (Italy, 1994) performs Gavotte et six doubles from Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Suite in A minor, RCT 5, and Franz Liszt’s Sonata in B minor. As an encore, Pierdomenico plays Frédéric Chopin’s Etude Op. 10 No. 1. This performance was recorded at Auditorium Giorgio Gaber in Milan, in December 2019.


PIAM - Semi-final: Beethoven and Liszt

As part of the Premio Internazionale Antonio Mormone (PIAM), Philipp Scheucher (Austria, 1993) performs Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fantasia Op. 77; Menuetto: ‘Moderato e grazioso’ from Beethoven’s Sonata No. 18 in E-flat major, Op. 31 No. 3; and Franz Liszt’s transcription of the first movement, ‘Allegro con brio’, from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor. This performance was recorded at Nuovo Teatro Ariberto in Milan, in May 2021.

This performance was recorded at Auditorium Giorgio Gaber in Milan, in December 2019.
