Saturdays in November

Every Saturday morning in November, Stingray Classica broadcasts various recent performances by music students from the renowned Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, Spain. Pianist Paloma O'Shea founded the institution in 1991 to provide a high-performance training centre for young musicians and to bring classical music to a larger audience. Alumnus and cellist Asier Polo opens on November 6 with a selection of Cello Suites by J. S. Bach. Among the other highlighted broadcasts are works for piano four hands performed by Víctor and Luis del Valle, and renditions of chamber music works by Joseph Haydn, Antonín Dvořák, and César Franck.


J. S. Bach - Cello Suites No. 2, 3 & 4

Schubert, Frank, Ravel and Sarasate

Spanish piano duo 'Dúo del Valle', consisting of Luis and Victor del Valle, performed a recital of works for piano four hands by Franz Schubert and Maurice Ravel. Moreover, violinist Ana María Valderrama Guerra joined them for renditions of compositions by César Franck and Pablo de Sarasate. Franz Schubert's Eight variations on a original theme for piano four hands, D. 813 Op. 35 is followed by César Franck's Sonata in A major for Violin and Piano. The second half opens with Maurice Ravel's 'Ma mère l'oye' for piano four hands, followed by Pablo de Sarasate's Danzas Españolas for violin and piano, Op. 22. The recital was part of the Reencuentro Concert Series, and was recorded at Sala Argenta del Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria in Santander, Spain in 2020.


Dvořák's Piano Quintet Op. 81 & Piano Trio No. 4

In 2020, the Jóvenes Talentos Fundacíon Banco Sabadell Concert Series hosted an Antonín Dvořák night at Auditorio Sony of Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. First on the program, Spanish quintet Óscar Esplá de Asisa performs Antonín Dvořák's Piano Quintet, Op. 81. The Quintet consists of Patricia Cordero Beltrán (violin), Raquel Areal Martínez (violin), Raquel De Benito Forriol (viola), Montserrat Egea (cello), and Izem Gürer (piano). Second on the program, Trio Mozart de Deloitte performs Antonín Dvořák's Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor, Op. 90, B. 166, 'Dumky'. Trio Mozart de Deloitte consists of Diana Poghosyan Mirzoyan (violin), Alejandro Viana Herreros (cello), and Tomás Alegre (piano).


Chamber Music by Haydn, Bellini, Pasculli & Chopin

The Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, Spain offers talented musicians profound musical training and valuable concert experience. This broadcast, a 2021 concert at Auditorio Sony of the Reina Sofía School of Music, shows the combined performances of several of the School's current students and recent alumni. String quartet Cuarteto Haendel de Puertos del Estado, in its 2021 configuration of Sara Valancia Villeta (violin), Paula Mejía España (violin), Carmen Gragera Salas (viola), and Eva Arderíus Esteban (cello), perform Joseph Haydn's String Quartet No. 30, H III:38, Op. 33, No. 2. They are then joined by oboist Lucas Martínez Riaza for a performance of Vincenco Bellini's Oboe Concerto in E-flat major – the composer's only surviving concerto – here in a version for oboe and string quartet. A thematically related piece, Antonino Pasculli's 'Omaggio a Bellini' for English horn and harp, is then performed in a version for English horn and piano by Paulo Roberto Pinto Junior (English horn) and João Guilherme Barata (piano). To close the concert, pianist Natalie Schwamova plays three moving compositions for solo piano by Frédéric Chopin: Nocturne Op. 27, No. 2, Waltz Op. 64, No. 3, and Ballade Op. 52. The concert was part of the Fundacíon Banco Sabadell Young Talents Series.
