Verdi - Rigoletto
Riccardo Frizza leads the Orchestra and Chorus of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s tragic opera Rigoletto (1851). In 1850, Teatro La Fenice commissioned Verdi to compose a new opera. Verdi proposed Victor Hugo’s controversial play Le Roi s'amuse to his librettist Francesco Maria Piave. This play, which premiered in 1832 but was banned after only one performance, portrayed the monarchy in its worst vices. However, Verdi was determined to adapt the play to opera and reached a compromise with the censor. The opera revolves around Rigoletto, a hunchbacked jester at the court of the licentious Duke of Mantua. Rigoletto’s life is turned upside down when his latest wisecrack starts a vendetta that is far from amusing, leaving him cursed. In this 2021 production, Italian director Davide Livermore follows the story as we know it, but places it in a contemporary setting. Among the soloists are Javier Camarena (Duke of Mantua), Luca Salsi (Rigoletto), Enkeleda Kamani (Gilda), Alessio Cacciamani (Sparafucile), Caterina Piva (Maddalena), and Valentina Corò (Giovanna). This performance was recorded at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, Italy, in 2021.

Waldbühne 1997 - St. Petersburg White Night
The 1997 edition of the Waldbühne concert is dedicated to Russian composers. The Berliner Philharmoniker, directed by Zubin Mehta, kicks off the evening with the opening of Mikhail Glinka's opera Ruslan and Ludmila, after which Daniel Barenboim takes center stage to perform Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 and Chopin's Waltz in D flat major, op. 64 No. 1. The evening then pays homage to Mussorgsky with the prelude Khovanshchina and Gopak, taken from The Fair at Sorotchinsky. The orchestra also interprets Flight of the Bumblebee and Capriccio Espagnol, op. 34 from Rimsky-Korsakov. As is tradition, the Berliner Philharmoniker closes this Waldbühne concert with Paul Lincke's Berliner Luft.

Brahms - Symphony No. 4, Op. 98
Franz Welser-Möst conducts The Cleveland Orchestra in this performance of Brahms' Symphony No. 4. This is the final of the composer's short selection of symphonic works. Described by music critic Malcolm Macdonald as one of the “supreme creative acts of the Romantic era,” Brahms' Fourth Symphony is endowed with a strong undercurrent of subdued melancholy. It seems to pine for an irretrievable past. The past lives on majestically in this work, particularly in the sighing theme of the first movement reminiscent of Baroque practice, and, above all, in the use of the Baroque form of the chaconne in the last movement, around which Brahms spins over 30 variations on a solemn, stately theme. This performance was recorded at Severance Hall in Cleveland, USA, in 2014.
