With sublimely beautiful music that supports, intensifies, and enhances the drama every step of the way, the Piano Concerto No. 24, K 491 is solid drama from start to finish, with a minor harmonic structure reminiscent of Don Giovanni. In this performance, recorded at Schönbrunn palace in Vienna, Andre Previn is the soloist and conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Director Carlus Padrissa created an astonishing avant-garde production of Joseph Haydn’s oratorio The Creation (Die Schöpfung), Hob. XXI:2 with internationally acclaimed Catalan theatre group La Fura dels Baus. This multimedia production presents the viewer with a continuous stream of imagery, text and spectacle, transforming the composer’s masterpiece into an immersive theatrical experience. The show utilizes huge helium-filled balloons, a stage crane, and singers submerged in an aquarium. In this performance, French conductor Laurence Equilbey leads her own insula orchestra and choir accentus. Vocal soloists are soprano Mari Eriksmoen, baritone Daniel Schmutzhard, and tenor Martin Mitterrutzner. This performance was recorded at La Seine Musicale in Paris, France, on May 12, 2017.

Italian cellist Silvia Chiesa and Italian pianist Maurizio Baglini perform a wonderful recital of works by Ferruccio Busoni, Franz Liszt, Frédéric Chopin, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. On the program are Busoni’s Kultaselle – 10 variations on a Finnish folksong; Liszt’s Two Elegies for cello and piano; Chopin’s Introduction and Polonaise brillante in C major, Op. 3; and Rachmaninoff’s Sonata in G minor for cello and piano, Op. 19. As an encore, the duo plays Leonard Bernstein’s iconic composition ‘Tonight’ from the musical West Side Story. This performance was recorded at Sala Verdi of the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan, Italy, on November 4, 2024.

Soprano Lauren Margison (Canada, 1992) performs ‘Tu che di gel sei cinta’ from Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot; ‘Embroidery in childhood’ from Benjamin Britten’s opera Peter Grimes; and ‘Ah! Je ris’ from Charles Gounod’s opera Faust, during the first round of the Voice Edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal 2022 (CMIM). This performance was recorded at the Bourgie Hall of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

In 'Dance on screen', renowned film maker Reiner E. Moritz explores how twentieth-century modern media influenced the development of dance, and vice versa. The invention of the film camera and television has allowed audiences to see not only beautiful dancing and wonderful choreography, but it also brought the dancers’ facial expressions and stage presence to the screen. These technical developments allowed this essentially ephemeral art form to be preserved. 'Dance on screen', about both classical ballet and modern dance, features interviews with recognized choreographers and directors. Moreover, many of the great dancers of the twentieth century are seen in performance, including Alvin Ailey, Anna Pavlova, and Pina Bausch.

The Rina Sala Gallo International Piano Competition takes place every two years in the Italian city of Monza. Founded in 1947 by Monza-born pianist Rina Sala Gallo and Brescia-born pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, the competition is one of Monza’s most prestigious cultural events today. This broadcast featuring the three finalists’ best performances from the competition’s 26th edition, were recorded at the Villa Reale di Monza in October 2022. First, Young Sun Choi (South Korea, 1991) performs Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 30 in E major, Op. 106. After, Seunghyuk Na (South Korea, 1997) plays ‘Oiseaux tristes’ and ‘Alborada del gracioso’ from Maurice Ravel’s five-movement suite Miroirs. Next, Ivan Bašić (Serbia, 1996) performs Franz Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz No. 1. Lastly, Choi returns for a performance of Claude Debussy’s Images (Book I).

Les Dissonances is a collective of artists founded by violinist David Grimal in 2004. The conductorless ensemble consists of musicians from the most prestigious European orchestras, international soloists, and young talents. In this performance, Les Dissonances perform Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36. The composer wrote the symphony between 1877 and 1878, and dedicated it to Nadezhda von Meck – an exceptionally wealthy widow and great admirer of Tchaikovsky’s music, whom the composer described as ‘my best friend’. Tchaikovsky explained in his letters that the symphony is characterization of the nature of fate. The work opens with a powerful motif in the horns and bassoons representing fate. The second movement expresses melancholy, whereas the third presents ‘fleeting images that pass through the imagination when one has begun to drink a little wine’. Although the ‘fate’ motif reappears toward the end of the final movement, the movement has a festive character. This performance was recorded at La Cité de la musique in Paris in 2016.

Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) composed nine books of madrigals in half a century, which helped transform the genre from the polyphonic, a cappella madrigals of the late Renaissance to the ‘concertato’ madrigals of the early Baroque, shifting the style’s focus to the ability of music to express emotions contained in a text. In 2011, British tenor Paul Agnew and renowned Baroque ensemble Les Arts Florissants started recording eight books of Monteverdi’s madrigals. In this program, Agnew leads Les Arts Florissants in the madrigals of Book I. Published on New Year’s day of 1587, Book I consist of seventeen madrigals for five voices. This performance was recorded at the Cité de la musique in Paris, France, in 2011.

Who could imagine that a failed job application would lead to some of the most beautiful classical music ever written? Employed by Leopold, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen, an unsatisfied Johann Sebastian Bach craved a career change in 1721. Wishing to join the court of Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg, Bach presented him with six new concertos in the hopes of securing a position. Unfortunately, Christian Ludwig never even thanked the composer for his majestic and superbly beautiful work. Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 is an exuberant four-movement composition. Originally written for the clarion, a precursor of the modern trumpet.

The sensational Sollazzo Ensemble gives us two concerts of unique Burgundian repertoire. The Leuven Song Book, only recently discovered and now in the safe hands of the Alamire Foundation, is a revelation; not only does it contain long-forgotten repertoire, but also an exquisite collection of late Burgundian polyphony. Nowhere is the sombre melancholy described by Huizinga more perfectly illustrated than in this chansonnier.

The meeting between the French composer Hector Berlioz and the handsome actress Harriet Smithson sparked the inspiration for one of Berlioz’ most famous pieces. When Berlioz had seen Smithson perform a work by Shakespeare, he was instantly smitten with her. He sent her countless love letters, but she never reciprocated. Berlioz’ heart was broken, prompting him to compose his ‘Symphonie Fantastique: Épisode de la vie d'un Artiste...en cinq parties’ (‘Fantastical Symphony: An Episode in the Life of an Artist, in Five Parts’). The work tells the story of a young artist in the depths of despair, who attempts suicide because of an unrequited love. His attempt fails: the poison does not kill him; instead, it brings on hallucinations. This story is brought to life in Berlioz’ music performed by a large orchestra – which includes four harps and a bell – making it a revolutionary piece.

Maestro Myung-Whun Chung leads the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in this touching performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 in D major. Written in 1908-1909, it was the last symphony Mahler completed. Initially, the superstitious composer, believing in the so-called ‘curse of the ninth,’ did not want to write a Symphony No. 9. After all, fellow composers Ludwig van Beethoven and Anton Bruckner died before writing their tenth symphonies. Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 premiered on June 26, 1912, in Vienna, performed by the Vienna Philharmonic led by Bruno Walter. Unfortunately, the composer himself did not live to see this: he died in 1911. This performance was recorded at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, Italy, in 2021.

On March 23, 1783, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart gave a successful concert at Vienna’s Burgtheater that he dedicated to two sopranos: Aloysia and Josepha Weber, the sisters of his wife Constanze. The concert’s program would be considered odd by today’s standards. The composer’s Symphony No. 35 was broken up and interspersed with other compositions, such as concertos, arias, and works for solo piano. Nearly two and a half centuries later, French soprano Sabine Devieilhe, conductor Raphaël Pichon and his Ensemble Pygmalion bring a wonderful concert inspired by that remarkable event. The program includes: ‘Allegro con spirito’ of Symphony No. 35, also known as the Haffner Symphony; ‘Vorrei spiegarvi, oh Dio’, KV 418; ‘Schon lacht der holde Frühling’, KV 580; Trio of ‘Die Schlittenfahrt’ No. 3, KV 605; Deutscher Tanz No. 6, KV 571; ‘Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen’ from Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflöte; ‘Finale: Presto’ of Symphony No. 35; ‘Nehmt meinen Dank’, KV 383; and ‘Dans un bois solitaire et sombre’, KV 308. This performance was recorded at Théâtre Impérial de Compiègne, in Compiègne, France.

Pianist Vadim Repin and Violist Murad Hüseynov perform Gara Garayev's Violin Sonata and 24 Preludes for Piano. Recorded at La Grange ay Lac. Written and directed by Juliette Swierczewski and recorded at La Grange au Lac. Although Garayev is a 20th century composer, his music nonetheless carries allusions to romantic music. Murad, the main actor, will represent one of those characters carried by solitude that can be found in the romantic paintings of Friedrich. The overall atmosphere of the musical program is rather melancholic, tending either towards a certain musical lightness, or, on the contrary, towards drama. The production is a cinematographic accompaniment of the music and its performers.

The Berliner Philharmoniker - the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra - is regularly named one of the best orchestras in the world. In 1991, his members came together to perform a series of splendid chamber music pieces, including Mozart's Quintet for Horn in E flat (KV 407). Mozart composed this piece in 1782 for Ignaz Leutgeb, a horn player from the Salzburg Orchestra, who also inspired the composer with four other horn concertos. This version performed by the soloists of the Berliner Philharmoniker was recorded in the Philosophy Room of the library of the Strahov Monastery in Prague. The quintet is composed of Radovan Vlatkovic (French horn), Bernd Gellerman (violin), Bernhard Hartogh (viola), Rainer Moog (viola), and Jörg Baumann (double bass).

The Prague Ballet Gala is an exclusive dance event at the beautiful Prague State Opera featuring performances by leading ballet stars. Among these stunning dancers are Dmitri and Daniil Simkin, Maria Alexandrova and Sergey Filine, Jean Jacques Herment, and Viviana Franciosi. They present their favourite classical and modern pieces from legendary choreographers such as George Balanchine, Marius Petipa, José Limón and John Neumeier.

"It would be hard to find anything greater, more significant or more moving anywhere in musical life today: total harmony of mind and heart, poetry and outcry, fear and consolation, knowing and feeling," declared the Berne paper Der Bund after this stunning performance of Mahler's Resurrection Symphony in August 2003 by the newly founded Lucerne Festival Orchestra. Claudio Abbado had formed this ensemble from famous instrumentalists, celebrated chamber-musicians and experienced soloists from the world's best orchestras, and the event was sold out months in advance. In this performance, the magnificent soloists Eteri Gvazava (soprano) and Anna Larsson (mezzo-soprano) are accompanied by Orfeón Donostiarra choir.
